W.I.P.

Mod TheLatentImage  7.6 years ago

Let's have a chat about works in progress.

I have been seeing far too many unfinished designs, sneak peeks, and posts of people asking for help coming down the design feed. This doesn't necessarily apply to posting of xml editing requests and such. Though I personally feel that those should be uploaded privately and linked to the individual requesting. There are a few issues that I have with these things which I will address here.

I believe that the design feed should be used for the posting of finished and working designs. There are way too many works in progress and non working designs being posted that are cluttering up the feed.

I feel like there are a couple of reason for this. One is that people want to show off what they are working on, which is totally cool. But, I think the forums are a more appropriate place to showcase a work in progress as opposed to the design feed page.

Another reason is that I think people are trying to squeeze every last vote out of people that they can. You don't need people to vote all 9 stages of your work in progress. You can post that on the forums, and post the finished product on the design feed.

This goes for sneek peeks and people asking for help as well. Post that on the forums. If you need help on a design then upload it unlisted and direct people there in your forum post.

Myself and the other moderators will be actively looking for these types of things. We would appreciate your help in doing your part to try to clean things up a bit.

Yes, I hate this. I click a plane and it says "need help, doesn't fly" or something.

I agree with that statement it means I don't have to worry about a part getting posted by the person I asked for help I know this happened between me and sheepsblood I made a unlisted post which I tagged him in I he then posted it he had done what I needed but he posted as listed meaning everyone got a unwanted sneak peek of the design and I know he didn't mean to get so much attention because he said do not upvote but then I see over 70 upvotes on it and many more downloads and i decided well I guess they liked it so far so went with it to not be a a hole but I then see it in his highlighted and I already started on the next design with him then he gets banned for well you know I don't care about the old design now but now I have no idea how I'm supposed to build the jet the new design was going into when the design is not finished? @TheLatentImage

@MechWARRIOR57 it would be an unofficial rule, but it was proposed to and approved by the devs before I made the post.

so is this like a rule now? or an onoffical rule? @TheLatentImage

@livetoplay11 you would get a reduced number of points from the votes on the forum post. But it isn't necessary to try and harbor full votes on multiple uploads of a work in progress. Instead we would prefer if you showed off your w.i.p. on the forums and then uploading your final design on the design feed.

Wouldn't you just get the points from the forum if you added a link to an unlisted creation?

@TheLatentImage the one moment when you realize that a plane you make is a W.I.P that is what happened to me when I saw this rule and looked at one of my planes. Lol.

@Tully2001 I think that is a good suggestion but instead get zero points from them

And it doesn't work to use forums I used to do wip's until everyone jumped in the bandwagon of hating them

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with it people simply don't like it because of jealousy

@TheLatentImage So I posted 3 different variations of 1 truck...does that count as spam?

@RocketIndustries the upload of the work in progress can be private, then you can post about it on the forums, show pictures, and direct people to the private upload to check it out.

@Tully2001 the forums can be used the same way to showcase a work in progress. A few points can be gained from people voting the forum post. I don't think another section of the website would be necessary for people to show things that they aren't finished working on yet.

    @TheLatentImage You're welcome. Actually, I've only uploaded a single near-finished build 6 months ago, but it's unlisted.

I've always had the same feeling as WIP posts, but I am guilty of posting parts for iOS users.

@JovianPat which is totally cool and exactly the way you should be doing things. Thank you

I don't upload my creations until they are fully completed, so it's fine. I usually do make some teasers or WIP images/videos on the forums for bigger projects or complex ones.
