Every P-38 Lightning Ever

26.9k Sunnyskies  7.7 years ago

As promised here is a comprehensive list of all the P-38s posted to this site. I did my best to painstakingly test and review each one individually. I graded them based on size and shape, aesthetic, functionality, and performance. I divided them into six categories. For fairness' sake, I have excluded my own Lightnings from the grading. You can find those in category seven. Also, for the sake of simplicity, I have excluded successor planes (unless all predecessors were unlisted), as those can be reached from the page of the original work.

My own search turned up hundreds of planes, and it was exhausting reviewing them all thanks to so many of them being uh... less than average. I'm sure I may have missed one or two here and there, so if you don't see yours on the list, leave me a comment, and I'll review it, then add it.

Also, I'd like to appoint myself as Curator of P-38s.
From here on out, if you ever make one, or see a new one, @ me, so I can review it and add it to this list. Or if you are one of my followers, spotlight it for me.

1. Faithful Replicas - the category for planes that are close to being perfect replicas

P-38 K "Blue Lightning" - by: BogdanX
Amazing work from BogdanX. Looks good, and flies good. A true combo. All my issues with this are really small ones only I'd care about. It's about as close to perfect as one could manage in 240 parts. Truly impressive. The best of the best! Absolutely download this if you haven't already!

One of the best-looking Lightnings on the site. It's amazing to look at, but its high part-count, and imperfect handling keep it from scoring perfectly. Not for mobile users.

2. Scale Models - the category for planes that looks great, but are either not sized right, or missing key details

Lockheed P-38 Lightning - by: jamesPLANESii
Perfect in almost every aspect. Kinda small for for a P-38, and missing a perfect score on 100% accurate shape, but the quality construction and pretty much perfect handling hoist this plane to a very high final score. I consider it among the best.

Lockheed P-38 Lightning - by: TheGuyYouMightKnow
Very excellent plane with an amazing cockpit. Having the best P-38 cockpit I've yet to see, it scores full marks in the aesthetic category. However, a mis-sizing and slightly inaccurate shape loses it a point in size/shape. Functionally, it could have used some ancillary features and more attention to detail. Performance is good, but lacks accuracy. The plane is most hindered by its high stall speed and nose-heaviness. Overall though, this is a very nice Lightning.

Lockheed P-38 Lightning (Version 2) -by: Mathieson
Amazing work on this one. The visuals are absolutely amazing, and deserve a solid 10. The radio antenna is a nice touch. However, problems exist in the functionality department, as the flaps don't actually affect the flight of the plane as they should, the nose rides too low on the ground, and the tail cannot be trimmed. Also, not major complaints, but the size is off, and the propellers don't spin in the correct direction. Great Lightning all around.

Lockheed P-38J Lightning - by: ChiChiWerx
A very good P-38. Design is close to being spot on, and would receive better marks if it were actual size. The aesthetics are great, and the functionality is top-notch. The handling is nearly perfect, and loses one point for being unstable when pushing multiple control surfaces to the stops. Fly this Lightning. It's great!

A very good plane is every category. Could be improved with a more accurate shape and size, but all else is great. P38 lightning - by: Helicopterboy
An interesting piece. Though its dimensions are next to accurate, its blocky, innacurate shape and somewhat strange design dock it some points. Aesthetically, the extra detailing and open cockpit net it some extra points. It flies acceptably, but suffers some weight and balance issues due largely to the bulky landing gear being swung back. Landing is tricky, requiring a precise throttle setting and a careful flare to avoid flipping the plane. Overall, a decent plane.

Very nice looking design. Particularly, the shape of the central nacelle, and the intercooler intakes. A decent attempt at a replica of a well-known airworthy P-38 survivor. It flies a little strangely, and is pretty far off as far as shape goes. The detailing is probably what stands out most on this piece. With some contouring and dimensioning tweaks, this could be a solid 9.

p-38 airbus 1 hour build - by: randomstudman
I wish I could unfly this plane. I didn't crash, so it doesn't deserve a zero.

By no means a bad plane performance and function-wise, however is loses many points for being shameless and uninspired.

How not to do a F38 - by: Anony
Looks like we have our first joke submission. It succeeds in all categories thanks to the fact it fails in all categories. The shape is way off, the build is zero-effort, the paint-job is blinding, and best of all, it is entirely unflyable. Well done, I must say. Most bad planes get a few points because they managed to do something a little right, but this gets all zeroes, and that takes some serious skill. Getting even the name wrong was a nice touch.

Lockheed P-38L Lightning "Sky Lightning" 2.0 UPDATE - by: Sunnyskies
An update to the one below. My best work. The one to download if you weren't sure.

Lockheed P-38L Lightning "Sky Lightning" - by: Sunnyskies
My latest, greatest masterwork. nearly 100% accurate to size and scale, looks great, is fully functional, and flies great. If I were rating it, it'd get a 10 overall for sure.

Lockheed P-38L Lightning (FINAL!) - by: Sunnyskies
My magnum opus. A high-fidelity replica with great looks and functionality. Definitely worth checking out.

Thank You For Gold - by: Sunnyskies
A gold reskin of the above plane built to celebrate promotion to gold.

Sky Lightning 4.0 - by: Sunnyskies
The next to final version of my ultimate P-38. It was good, but not good enough for me.

P-38L (Bomber-Fighter Loadout) - by: Sunnyskies
What I previously thought would be my final version. Ultimately, I had issues with it, so I improved it even more.

Sky Lightning 3.0 (Modded) - by: Sunnyskies
Right around the time I finally figured out how to XML mod parts. Of course I applied the skills to improving my Lightning.

Sky Lightning 3.0 - by: Sunnyskies
The next stage in Lightning evolution. This version was when I was finally getting close to perfecting the size and shape.

RP-38 Lightning Trimotor - by: Sunnyskies
A high-speed, low-drag trimotor variant built for racing. I entered this one in the Yeti Scramble Tournament.

Race Lightning - by: Sunnyskies
A variant of a previous version of my P-38 re-purposed into a racing plane.

Ugly Lightning (or "p38 lighting") - by: Sunnyskies
A joke plane made to embody all the things wrong with bad attempts at recreating the P-38

XJ-38 LightningStrike - by: Sunnyskies
A supersonic jet variant.

Simple Lightning (mobile-friendly) - by: Sunnyskies
My best P-38 with much fewer parts.

@TheLatentImage Thanks. I downloaded and flew every single one too.
It took a while to dig through all the planes on the site to find them. And even then, there were some that slipped through the cracks. I don't think people realize just how many planes are on this site in total.
I had stopped actively updating it a while ago. Now I only add new ones whenever people ask me to.

@Judmaierm No problem at all, friend. I'm a nice enough guy to spend a few minutes looking at a plane when asked.

@Sunnyskies also are you able to remove one and replace it? Because I am working on a version 3. It may take a while.

Can you review mine? Make sure to do the version 2. It is slightly better. You did say it shouldn't be a successor but I think you were talking about doing it twice. Don't bother with the original.
