Any pointers on how tire traction works?

It's set to auto by default, and turning it off presents some sliders, but I'm not sure how exactly they work, or what auto does.
Is there any reason to turn auto off?

    I used xml to make it 1000% traction and all it did was not let me move and it just wobbled

    The most basic thing is:
    Higher extremum ==> less responsive, more slidey
    Higher asymptote ==> more forgiving
    You have to imagine the Unity wheel collider curve for yourself

    @BaconEggs I see. So higher extrenum makes the grip hold on until the very last moment, at which point it disappears.

    This is the first time I've seen such an accurate explanation. I learned a lot.

    "auto" just resets the grip multipliers to 1, i used to think it did something mysterious with the grip but it does not change much

    extremum and asymptotes tend to be a huge point of confusion (understandably)... the extremum dictates where the maximum grip is compared to slip, and the asymptote dictates how fast the grip falls off when you spin / skid the tire. so a smaller extremum will have really tight grip like an F1 tire, and likewise higher will make the grip very sloshy and hard to lose grip at all. i dont know what happens when you make the asymptote less than the extremum, but making it really close will make the grip fall off much sharper, whereas making the asymptote number twice as much will make the falloff more smooth. all this is a lot more easy to notice with the elliptical grip mod as you actually lose grip properly and the car ro ta te

    I thought that the larger the number, the better the tire grip. If you lower the value too much, you will hear the tire spinning, the acceleration performance will decrease, and the top speed will also be slower. To be honest, I have no idea how the calculations are done when set to auto. (I just think that the state specified by the slider at 100% is auto.)
