The AK-102 (like the entire 100-series) is basically an export version, which is why it has such an unusual caliber for the Soviet school. This version was intended for export to countries where 5.56 ammunition is more readily available than 5.45 or 7.62. In addition to the shortened 102 version, there were also 101 with standard barrel and 108 with balanced automatic rifle using 5.56. They can be identified by the even straighter magazine than the AK-74.
