Valery Ostapchuk, General Director of JSC Naryan-Marsky JSC, commented on the accident:
"The aircraft had a certificate of airworthiness, passed all the repairs on time. The crew performed all the necessary pre-flight procedures before departure. In the morning, two planes flew along the Naryan-Mar – Ust-Kara route (the route passes through Karatayka). Got into the icing only on the way back. Weather conditions deteriorated rapidly, the crew decided not to land in Karatayka and follow to the alternate Varandey airfield.
The most likely cause of the accident is unpredictable severe icing. The exact reason will be determined by the commission of inquiry of the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC)."
Likely ran out of fuel or turned too tight. However, it is often best assumed to be pilot error before more research indicating out-of-control events (e.g. mechanical failure).
Oh no its the one with the cool red-yellow fade livery :(
