How do missiles in SP track and how do flares decoy the missile?

41.5k rexzion  2.5 years ago

just asking how the missiles in sp track the target and how flares/chaff actually decoy the missile, i've been noticing in this update that even when i deploy flares the missile doesn't lose lock immediately and either takes alot of countermeasures to lose track or doesn't lose track at all.

    @rexzion Jundroo should add a heat-seeking missile.

What about the dogfight mode? Using missiles would just be a giant mess @rexzion

@CC1010 i don't really see the issue with people making overpowered missiles like this isn't war thunder it's not a competitive game

    Why wouldn’t they? @rexzion

@CC1010 uhh ok but what if people dont

People would jsut make their missiles unavoidable, which makes flares completely pointless @rexzion

@CC1010 they should add a attribute to missiles that allows you to change how susceptible a missile is to flares and if it's affected by only flares or chaff

Yeah i was thinking in a later update launching flares would give them their own little cockpit kinda, where the missle would randomly lock onto one of its options, that could be the flares, or unlikely due to how many flares there are, the cockpit. Basically if you launched 99 flares, it would have a 1% chance to go after you, and a 1% chance for each flare to go after that @AWESOMENESS360

Sometimes I can't even break missile lock using flares and chaff

    Yeah lol
I think the weapon update was great but didn’t bring the realism the community desires so much. @rexzion

The missile tracks target by its cockpit block location.

Fun fact: Avalanche base has a special ability. It could destroy your airborne ammunition at certain number. No other Ai in-game could to do that.

@Kangy not just reworking missiles, reworking weapons.
they forgot about the rocket part in game and it has no explosionScale lmao

It just tracks the cockpit and continues to track it until it hits
It's pretty dumb and lazy but the devs are a smaller studio
Personally I think if we even get another update it should be working on reworking missiles because they're terrible atm

@rexzion yea lmao. Chaff should be the only one that works. Now that they have variables in the game, they should make it where that is the only way you can stop the missiles, and then add like an infrared missile that works with the flares

also isn't it weird that the only missiles in SP are radar guided yet flares work on them lol

@LieutenantSOT interesting, better than just pop flares once and missile gives up entirely lol

I also think that the size of the aircraft plays a part into how many flares it takes. Because on one aircraft of mine it took 9 flares, and on another it only took 3 or 4

The missiles target and lock onto the cockpit block, which likely has some form of a code that allows missiles to know its location, and the most accurate path to take to connect to the cockpit part
    .
The flares and chaff each have a certain amount of fires before the missile gives up. I think with flares it is 4 flares per missile. If its still locking, it is 1 flare. I'm not sure about chaff though. But either way, it's just a simple code that stops the missile from tracking after a certain number of flares/chaff have been fired (unless you relock onto the target, that is). As CC1010 said below, the missiles do not chase the flares, but rather are disengaged by them

@CC1010 that could be really cool, but I think with the way missiles work in SP, it can’t lock onto a flare. I think they only lock onto targets with an official targeting reticule, like players, AI Planes, land/sea AI’s, etc. Flares are their own non-targetable entity, much like missiles themselves, cannon rounds, bullets from miniguns and wing-guns, basically those kinds of things.

But hey, who knows! And I know the game just updated, but in future updates, there’s always the chance that the Devs surprise us. They certainly did that with 1.11, that’s for sure!

I wish they would just make missiles chase flares. Solves this kind of issue and its way more realistic
