Conversion of the Spitfire MkV- The Spitfire MkIX

13.2k brians1209  3.0 years ago

Under MisterT's permission, I have converted his Spitfire MkVb into a Spitfire MkIXe.

Development of the MkIX (1941-1942)

Similar to what I did, the first Spitfire IX was actually a MkV with a Merlin 60 engine.

The MkIX's were needed to replace the MkVs which were greatly outpeformed by the Fw190s which came up in 1941.

A RR Merline 60 engine, which was designed to be fitted in the high altitude version of the Wellington bomber, was fitted on a Spitfire MkV, which caused the engine cowling to be larger, and made some changes other stuffs.

Armament of the IX

During the conversion, the armaments have also changed, 3 types of fixed armament; the 'B', 'C', and the 'E' type wing.

B

The 'B' wing has two Hispano bays, four .303 browning bays. 60rpg for the Hispanos, 350rpg for the .303s.
It was first seen on the Spitfire MkIB.

C

The 'C' wing has four Hispano bays, four .303 browning bays.
120rpg for the Hispanos, 350rpg for the .303s.

Usually only two Hispano bays were used, the other two were left empty, or a quite unusal configuration; 4 Hispano cannons and sealed .303 bays.

E

The 'E' wing, which I have built, has 4 Hispano bays and no .303 bays.

120/135rpg for the Hispanos (×2), and 250/280rpg for the .50in brownings, which were much more effective than the .303s.

-MkIXe

-MkVb

-E wing, 2× 20mm Hispano, 2× .50in Browning

-B wing, 2× 20mm Hispano, 4× .303 Browning

    looks amazing!
change the flight model too, the vb didn't turn as well as the ix, nor roll as well
the ix was a direct counter to the fw 190, so keep that in mind
