Basics of building a heli??

443 BigBeast  3.7 years ago

So guys as i pledged to learn about a variety of planes and vessels, it's helicopters turn on my list.

I need professionals to tell me how to master an easy to control helicopter preferably without using xml

i will credit everyone who helps me on my next helicopter

thanks in advance to whoever contributes to this forum :D

    In real life, the faster a helicopter flies forward, the more it pulls to the side. This gets worse until the helicopter reaches a point where it can't maintain a steady course. If you're interested, you can read about it here. I've never built a chopper so I don't know if it happens in SP, but if your helicopter does this don't worry, it's normal.

    Further info:

    • You can reduce the necessary main rotor power by making the main rotor blades longer or thicker, up to a point. The lowest possible power to weight ratio is probably ~ 1/5 hp/kg (approx. the power to weight ratio of a fully loaded Robinson R22). * Sorry, messed up the conversion originally
    • Disk loading (the heli equivalent of wing loading) should be between about 10 lb/ft^2 and 2 lb/ft^2, with lower loading giving better efficiency and higher loading generally giving higher speeds (iirc). Calculate loading by Pi * (main rotor radius)^2 / (desired max takeoff weight). If too high, lower weight or increase rotor size.

    @BigBeast
    A) big rotor goes directly over your center of gravity. Like, exactly. Tweak everything else to ensure this is the case.
    B) little rotor goes out on a boom, far enough away that the big rotor can't ever hit it. Make the boom as light as possible.

    Give the big rotor power equal to about 1/2 the craft's mass in Kg: if your heli is 1000kg, 500hp is probably a good starting point.
    Give the little rotor about 10% of the big rotor's horsepower to start.

    @Yourcrush might as well just build a blimp at that point. Torque effects are one of the main components of rotorcraft aerodynamics.

    @BigBeast Ok. That's a relief. Good luck.

    NO THANK YOU!

    I got the UH-1 Huey module for DCS on steam summer sale a couple years ago. It took me a matter of minutes to discover that me and helicopters do not mix. Holy crap there are so many ways to crash a helicopter that you'd never expect, it's amazing.

    @Starbound Helicopters are dangerous, nauseating, loud contraptions and I hope I never have to ride in one. But they're also the best tools for a wide variety of critical tasks and also a huge part of the history of the 20th century. To say they are "inferior" to fixed wing craft is like saying a shovel is inferior to a hammer.

    @Starbound who cares? if he wants to build a heli let him. who cares if it's "less efficient" or whatever. let him build a helicopter, smh my head

    @Starbound if u read the first line in description u would know why i created this forum. nobody said which is better, am just trying to learn about different stuff

    @rexzion It will be more worth the effort as you will end up with a superior machine. Also that comparison is flawed since even the most primitive of aircraft are vastly superior to the most modern helicopters.

    @Starbound he wants to build a heli, just because a 5th gen fighter is better than a WW1 biplane doesn't mean you shouldn't make it

    I recommend you to build a plane, since that is a superior type of vehicle.

    @rexzion well i did actually and it just kept spinnin and breakdancin, i guess i need to know where and how to plave the rotors
