Subjective Morality

Mod Squirrel  4.2 years ago

The human paradox is an interesting concept. The idea that morality and what is right or wrong is entirely subjective to the people judging a situation. The idea that no single rule in reality can be universally applied and enforced with a 100% success rate and without conflict. There will always be an exception to the rule.

On the face of it the idea that morality is entirely subjective is perhaps a bit daunting if you dwell on it for a while. However, this way of thinking has long term benefits in the sense you'll be more likely to approach situations in an objective way. Asking yourself "what's the person on the receiving end seeing that I'm not".

People don't usually do things deliberately out of pure malice for no reason, or because "they're an idiot". There's usually a very legitimate reason behind it. A reason that may be more logically sound than your own.

In practice, this way of thinking is very difficult to implement. It challenges the very foundations of your own morals and beliefs. You have to learn to overcome your brain's own backfire effect. To take a step back, take a break and take another look at the situation with a fresh pair of eyes. And often, those that think they've mastered it, haven't.

How does this relate to the website?

At this point, I appreciate I've probably just impersonated 90% of your head teachers at a school assembly.

But, as I'm sure you all know, there's been a smidgen of drama on the site. I don't think I need to say anymore since it's pretty obvious to those that have been unfortunate enough to witness or be part of said flareup.

However, I think the whole community could benefit from thinking "does this post have potential to have malicious implications and if so, how can I mitigate that". I'm not saying you have to behave like that, but I'm currently going through the General Grievous stage of a cold and you'd be making a sick Squirrel happy if you made an effort to think like this on the site.

That's right I'm trying to guilt trip you into being nice.

In all seriousness though. I do think it's a way of thinking we can all benefit from and it'll bring us on step closer to a nicer and more accepting community.

@Squirrel It isnt, honestly people should fear mods in one way or another, because even if they dont break rules, it's good to always give them a reason not to with supervision. In my case, I don't ever want to even break rules, and if I do, i probably couldnt live with myself. So it's a good thing! Thanks for all the hard work you put in, along with all the other mods.

@Brields95 we've got a really big project at work at the moment, so I haven't had a lot of free time (due to overtime). Will hopefully be back at it again soonish.

Ok I lied. My second comment is this. Where have you been? The mp room is getting boring without your big creations.

@Brields95 I'm not saying you're Wong, but I think it's important to note that a lot of the opinions people have formed on both sides are on a purely speculative basis with little to no supporting evidence behind them. Correlation does not equal causation.
    .
I do agree that both parties have something to learn from this though.

All I'm going to say is this. This is going to be my only comment here.
1 Making a successor of say an electric car to make fun electric cars is comedy. Electric cars have become a meme. And the OP will benefit from any upvotes.

2 Making an alternate account to be malicious towards another player is cowardly. And you can pretty easily get caught.

3 Nothing wrong with being a female in a males world. But man up and show you have the bigger balls.

4 Using your femininity as a crutch to start drama again is cowardly.

5 If you see drama going on, stay out of it. Two's a tango, four's a square dance.

Conclusion: Both sides were in the wrong but noone should have gotten involved. It was best to tag a moderator and be done with it.

Moderators have a tough job. They have to keep watch over a very fluid environment while balancing every day life and the difference in timezones doesn't help. There isn't enough of you. There should be moderators that are on alot of the time.

Personally I'd love to do it but I understand I have standing arguments with a few active users. Even though at this point I think those arguments have blown over I think I'm still blocked and I know I'm ineligible because of that.
