You can have simpleplanes and the file editor open at the same time. To view the changes in game, save the file in the text editor, then tab over to the game, click load, and scroll down the craft you edited and load it. Your changes have now been loaded into the game.
In terms of code editors i use, i use a program for windows called TextEdit, i use it for editing save files for a game called Black Ice, which can have ginormous save files. It has a handy feature where you can hotkey a jump to a line, so i can hotkey to the inventory/ story progress, or in your case, special areas in your FT code
Take a break, watch a movie, take a nap, forget about it for a month, then come back with a fresh mindset and twisted imagination.
