If you have access to .xml, make a big spool, have a chain of hinges on one side, and modded rotators on each side of the spool. Then you can make it pretty

you can use fuselages and fuselage inlets. For normal fuselages, set the height to 0.01 and change the color if you want it to stick out. For fuselages, make it the same thickness as the surface you're applying it to (or 0.25), and set the thickness acccordingly
just take two fuselage inlets, change the corner types to make a D, and you could make an arrow with two normal fuselage blocks. Nudge them accordingly.

Try making a new verison of the Railway Mod, once you get the hang of it. Currently, it's the only map we can use trains on.
