  • Snow Crawl 7.6 years ago

My progress report: Drive and suspension working well. Steering is a problem, the wheels struggle to provide enough turning power at high speed, and trying to use vertical stabilisers with control surfaces is causing the car to try to barrel roll when in the air.
I'm trying a new and different design out, it might just be crazy enough to work.

  • Snow Crawl 7.6 years ago

@SkullsAndCrossbones The cars are driven under AI control at 100% throttle. Turns are done with the roll control, so make sure your steering turns on a roll input. The stream is usually up shortly after the submission deadline closes, keep checking back and there'll be a link to it.

  • Snow Crawl 7.6 years ago

My first design to complete the course did it in 1:46. Not bad, but I can definitely get it to go quicker.

  • Snow Crawl 7.6 years ago

@Typhlosion130 Yes, that last jump is big. My first design was doing OK (slow and steady) until then, but that killed it.

  • Question about tanks for developers 7.6 years ago

Tracks, and big, heavy tank guns. It'd be fun using them on a tank, but also fun trying to make a plane fly with them attached.

@Hellohi It's designed to be from the WW2 time period, and is for a challenge to create a fictional WW2 fighter.

@lordverminaard I don't think there is any magic to it, I think it's that the AI runs slightly differently on different computers. I had it happen in the Riding Dirty tournament, mine crashed twice in a place where it had never crashed in testing. It's just one of those things - and at least it makes the tournament it bit more unpredictable and exciting.
I'm liking the car contests as well - Riding Dirty was OK, but this one was really good, some close races in it. The only problem is that we'll have to wait ages for the next tournament now - I want to do another one straight away!

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

@crxtsp Again, not going to happen. It's relatively easy to auto-detect modded parts, but not to detect if nudge has been used.

By the way, can people please stop whining about losing? You knew the rules when you entered the contest, you made the choice to compete under those rules, so don't complain when you lose to a vehicle that's allowed by the rules.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

@crxtsp Not going to happen. And if it got removed, it would make it impossible to do a lot of the really detailed creations that people like.

  • GP-175 Teksab 7.6 years ago

@mikoyanster Thanks for confirming this is an acceptable entry.
@AviownCorp The wings aren't all directly connected to the fuselage, but they are attached in a (fairly) plausible way. I admit that bit of the design lacks elegance, but it works and isn't obviously unrealistic.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

@DesertEagle3450 It's called the Octoline. I'm leaving it unlisted until the tournament starts, though.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

I've got my entry in. I might have made it too big again, but the time is decent - if not as fast as some that have been claimed - and it seems pretty consistent.

  • Futureistic Challenge 2 (Closed) 7.6 years ago

Thank you for third place, the upvotes are appreciated.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

    Dear Mr. AI,

When you need to go in a straight line down the runway, please do not touch the steering. It just makes you spin out and skid off the course.

    Thank you.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.6 years ago

Current car progress status: Discovering new and interesting ways to fail. My best effort so far completed the course in 1:11. Which might not have been too bad, except it missed 11 rings. Oops.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.7 years ago

@FlyingNarwhal Not fighting, discussing. Hopefully it'll give @AndrewGarrison contrasting points of view to help decide whether to allow collisions to be disabled in future tournaments or not.

@Tully2001 You see the final of the re-do as being the faster plane losing because of collisions. I see it as Supermini555's plane having better acceleration from the start and having that pay off. You know, in real life car races, track position matters. It doesn't matter if you theoretically have a faster time over the whole lap, if someone out-accelerates you and gets ahead, they have the advantage.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.7 years ago

    @Tully2001 How was that ruined?

  • Airstrip Drag 7.7 years ago

@Tully2001 I plan to try to make a fast and consistent car (having learned some lessons from the Riding Dirty race), but I also want to see crashes. For me, the excitement in the tournament comes from the unpredictability. That means that the things you dislike (such as crashes and AI misbehaviour) are the things that make the tournament enjoyable and interesting for me.
Also, as I have pointed out, disabling collisions makes having a head-to-head race completely pointless. If the cars can't affect each other, they're not racing against each other - they're racing against the clock.

  • Airstrip Drag 7.7 years ago

@AndrewGarrison I vote against allowing disableAircraftCollisions="True" in this tournament. It turns the tournament from a race into a time trial - there's no point having two cars running simultaneously if they can't interact.

New tournament! Yay! And the thing I learned from the last tournament is that lightweight designs seemed to do better than the massive slab of wheels and engines I entered.

  • Max Speed for Minimum Power Challenge 7.7 years ago

I'm in, my Orchon is up as a successor. It uses one of the small jet engines, and can hit 1040 mph in level flight at 2500 feet, which I think gives me a score of 1703 points.

@planemaker44 To make your plane show up as a successor, you need to:
    1) Download this plane
    2) Change it - you can get rid of everything except the cockpit - to make your plane
    3) Save it (you can change the name)
    4) Upload as normal

There's a bit more on successors here, but these are the basics.

  • GP-170 Platrask 7.7 years ago

So, how did this do in the tournament? It blew up twice, at a point it navigated with no problems in testing. Ah well, that's the way things go sometimes.

  • Riding Dirty 7.7 years ago

Well, I'm in. I'm reasonably fast and reasonably consistent, so I should do OK. I don't think I've got much chance of winning it, though. And being consistent might not matter much once cars start ramming into each other - but at least mine can keep going if it loses a wheel or a vertical stabiliser.

  • Riding Dirty 7.7 years ago

    @Meltingvenus1999 Yes, that's allowed.
