After Development of the A-1 through A-5 strike fighters stopped, the airframe was still desired for its ability to carry multiple armaments in a wide variety of configurations. the F-1 variant was developed as a purpose built fighter aircraft, but it shared a lot of characteristics with the A series. the F-2 was given a redesigned nose cone, a wider wing, and a redesigned powerplant, as well as the ability to carry upto four AIM-7E Sparrow AAMs and two 20 Liter Drop tanks.
