HMS Sappho Naval Cannon Challenge

This is my entry to Bogdan’s rather delicious cannon challenge!
Disclaimer
This is not s fully working ship for various reasons and more of a static model (sadly).

Details

HMS Sappho
Type: Protected Cruiser, Apollo-Class
Laid down: 1890 Cubitt town, London
Commissioned: 1893
Displacement: 3600 tonnes
Length: 314 ft
Beam: 43.5 ft
Draught: 17.5 ft
Speed: 19.75 knots
Complement: 273 to 300 Officers and men
Fate: Scrapped 1921

My thanks to Feanor for helpful advice regarding the salvos! Under helpful recommendation from Mustang I tried to build big with parts that had ‘calculate drag’ set off. This worked initially. I was able to build big with relatively few CTDs on this iPad.

That was until I mirrored the vessel, part count went up and I couldn’t even add parts and save without it CTD. As a result I could not trial and test this on the water and some bits are rather rough around the edges. For the few chances I got this ‘on the water’ I found guns have silly range and she won’t budge in the water (too many crashes to get propulsion sorted or generally fine tune things). BUT SHE FLOATS!!! :)

Anyway end of my dripping session. I will maybe return to this build when I finally rid myself of this iPad Air (1).

About this entry. Why an Apollo-Class Protected-Cruiser and specifically HMS Sappho I hear you ask? This challenge gave me the impetus to build something out my comfort zone. A nautical theme was a must (being a naval cannon challenge) so a ship was in order. I wanted to do something that (a) wasn’t too big, and (b) has something applicable to myself. So I chose HMS Sappho because my great grandad served aboard her as a Royal Marine during the Boer war.

She is roughly to proportion with semi realistic armament but for aforementioned reasons she is a static model. I’ve completed her in late Victorian garb as battleship grey is a bit drab for such a low part build. I thank you in a advance for any interest in the subject or the build!

Perhaps I will try that in future. It took 4 attempts just to upload it without it crashing. Probably won’t be doing another large build on this again. Damn frustrating. @EternalDarkness

Perhaps a better way to do it would be to make it sail and shoot before adding any details, then making all details and non-functioning structures (smoke stacks, bridge, ventilation shafts, masts...) with no mass and drag so they don't damage performance when added.
