The Qiang-5 (NATO code name: Fantan) is a supersonic attack aircraft that China began to develop in 1958. The aircraft is based on the technology of the Soviet MiG-19 fighter jet and was designed and manufactured by China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company. The Qiang-5 has a length of 15.65 meters, a height of 4.33 meters and a wingspan of 9.68 meters. The original Qiang-5I used the WP-6 A III engine. The aircraft first flew in June 1965 and passed the preliminary design finalization at the end of the same year. The Qiang-5 series of aircraft has been in mass production since 1968, and the last one was delivered on October 25, 2012. The Qiang-5 series aircraft are widely equipped in the Chinese Air Force and Naval Air Force, becoming one of the main combat models of China's ground attack. The aircraft won the Special Prize of China's National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1985 and became the first combat aircraft exported by China. However, according to reports in 2017, the Qiang-5 began to retire from the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
