Project Wreck Exploration: KMS Bismarck

What is Project Wreck Exploration?
PWE is one of my "small" side projects I made when I felt burned out after building my bigger, primary projects. It aims to recreate some of history's most famous shipwrecks, packed with a nice decorative research vessel the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, and a Mir deep sea submersible for you to control.
The Wrecks are accurately recreated and are 1:1 size, some of them are even in a realistic depth (only the ones that lie in a depth of less than 300 meters)

This build was made in memory of all the sailors on both sides, whose lives were lost during the battle to sink this beast. May they all rest in peace, and may never such event happen again.

WARNING!

To use this build, you have to create a custom water spawn, far from any of the vanilla islands:
This build has a massive 5 km x 5 km size base platform which would cause it to explode if you tried to spawn at the default water spawn.

History

German Battleship (unofficial-prefix: KMS, Kriegsmarine Schiff) Bismarck was the lead ship of her class of two battleships. She was named after the famous "Iron Chancellor", Otto von Bismarck.
Launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940, Bismarck was the largest battleship that Nazi Germany ever built (as well as her sister, Tirpitz which was launched in 1941). Bismarck had 8 massive, 380mm primary cannons, 12 150mm secondary cannons, and a large number of AA weaponry. Her belt armour was 320mm thick, making her a tough enemy to face.
She left for her first (and last) raiding mission on the 19th of May, 1941. She was followed by Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen and their goal was to search and destroy British cargo ships on the Atlantic.
British Admiralty recieved news of this mission and sent out HMS Prince of Wales and the pride the Royal Navy, HMS Hood. The two task forces met on the 24th of May and engaged each other in a battle later to be called the Battle of Denmark Straight. Hood and Princes of Wales opened fire on Bismarck and Prinz Eugen but missed many of their shots. The German ships returned fire and one of Bismarcks shells managed to land right in one of Hood's magazines, causing it to explode and sinking the ship immediately (only 3 sailors survived). With Hood sinking, the Germans focused on Prince of Wales, causing serious damage to her and forcing her to retreat.
After this battle, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen parted ways to return to occupied France separetly. All British warships in the area were called to hunt down Bismarck which included several battleships, cruisers, destroyers and the aircaft carrier HMS Victorious. The British successfully managed to slow Bismarck down, allowing them to catch up to her. The final battle began in which the british launched several attacks with obsolete Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers. Most of these attacks were unsuucessful as Bismarck managed to evade the incoming torpedoes, and even the ones that hit couldn't cause serious damage. However, one torpedo managed to hit Bismarck's rudders, causing it to jam and make the giant ship turn in a large circle: getting back to France was not possible anymore. After this, an intese exchange of shells started between Bismarck and the British fleet: later analysis of the wreck determined that the British did not cause any catastrophic damage and many of their sheels couldn't even penetrate Bismarck's armour. On the 27th of May, the order to scuttle Bismarck was given and at around 10:20, the charges went off, causing the ship to start to sink. She disappeared beneath the surface at around 10:40.
The wreck was discovered by Robert Ballard in 1989, sitting in a depth of around 4891 meters, almost a kilometer deeper than Titanic. She is resting on her keel with her main guns, her main mast and the end section of her stern just behind the rudder is missing (these lay in the debris field around the wreck) When she sank, she hit the side of an underwater hill and started to slide down on it backwards until she turned sideways and stopped after almost half a kilometer of sliding downhill. Several expeditions were made to her after Ballard's initial discovery, including one made by James Cameron in the form of a documentary (title: "Expedition: Bismarck")

Now about my build

Base Platform Size: 5 km x 5 km

Actual Part Count: 662

Depth: 505 meters

This builds features an accurate, 1:1 replica of the Bismarck's wreck and the debris field around it. It also features the replica of the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, a Russian research vessel that was used in James Cameron's expedition to the Bismarck. The third vehicle of the build is a Mir submersible. Two of these submerisbles exist, the Mir-1 and Mir-2, both of them operate from the Keldysh in real life, and similarly to her, they also had a part in Cameron's expedition.
You can control the Mir sub to move around while the rest of the build is all stationary.
The wreck is located roughly below the Keldysh and almost next to the starting point of the submersible. The hill on which she slid down when she sank is also partially recreated along with larger pieces of debris including her main mast and admiral's bridge, her main battery and the broken off part of her stern.

Controls:

  • Pitch - Sub ascend-descend
  • Roll - Sub yaw
  • Throttle - Sub forward propulsion
  • Thorttle + AG6 - Sub reverse propulsion (reverts the propulsion of Throttle. If you had 70% propulsion before activating AG6, after activating it, the propeller will produce -70% propulsion)
  • AG7 - Lights

As always, I hope you like this build!
