About The Aircraft

Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) is the national airline of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, with its main hubs in the national capitals of Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. The airline was founded in 1946, although it traces its roots all the way back to 1918 with Det Danske Luftfartselskab (Danish Air Lines) of Denmark, which later merged with the Swedish and Norwegian flag carriers to form SAS.

The airline has operated over 70 original DC-9 aircraft, with 49 of those being the -41 variant, making the airline the largest operator of the -41. Scandinavian Airlines has a unique history with the DC-9 aircraft, with two variants: the -21 and -41, being designed by Douglas in response to requirements put forth by the airline. The DC-9-41 is essentially a stretched -30 with uprated engines, giving it a maximum capacity of 125 passengers compared to the -30’s 115.

This aircraft, registered OY-KGS, was a DC-9-41 delivered new to SAS in October 1978. Named “Hall Viking” this aircraft was configured with 105 seats and served with the carrier until late 2001. The airframe was later sold in 2002 and scrapped.

Fuel and Payload Configuration:

The aircraft is configured by default with ~65% fuel load and with 18,400 lbs (8,350 kg) of payload, equivalent to ~90 passengers with baggage. In this configuration, the aircraft can perform a flight of up to 750 nmi (1,390 km). See the image below for the parts to modify if changing the weight or fuel load. You may notice the default fuel and payload has been reduced compared to the previous -51. This is because the airframe is not optimized to fly close to MTOW, and because for most users, 2-3 hours of endurance is not needed.

About The Project

This is the second classic DC-9 build/livery that I've made. SAS is such an iconic DC-9 operator which is part of why I chose to make this livery for the -40. Also, you might have noticed that all 3 planned liveries are for European airlines. This wasn't entirely intentional, but it's nice as I actually haven't made replicas of any European airlines before these. As for my next project, I am (finally) going to dedicate some time to the southwest planes, and I'll probably post them in pairs.
