Some Comments

Finally finished a new livery after about 1.5 weeks. As you can see, I've started using fuselage blocks to make the giant LOT logo (which is really satisfying), and the tail has text logos now.

The next build will be a plane that is cursed and that you may or may not upvote, by the way

That's a LOT of damage (AI plane hit me again)

The Belly Landing of LOT Flight 16

LOT Polish Airlines Flight 16 was scheduled to arrive at Warsaw Chopin Airport from Newark Liberty International Airport on 1 November 2011. Soon after leaving Newark, the crew got a warning that the plane's center hydraulic system had failed. Despite this, they decided to continue the journey to Warsaw in order to use up the fuel they had.

On approach to Warsaw Chopin Airport, the landing gear could not lower, and did a go-around. The flight went around the airport for about an hour in order to use up the remaining fuel and allow emergency services to prepare for the landing, which would now have to be done without landing gear.

At 2.20pm, the crew made a successful gear-up landing on Runway 33, with no injuries. The aircraft however, was badly damaged, resulting in a hull loss. All of those on board were safely evacuated.

The moment when the plane landed on its engines, with the friction produced causing a fire on engine 2.

Due to the damage caused, the plane was scrapped after the investigation.

Causes of the Accident

  • A hydraulic leak had occurred during takeoff, causing the landing gear, which is usually extended using hydraulics, to be unable to deploy. This leak was in turn caused by a hose in the center hydraulic system bending too much.
  • A popped circuit breaker on the right side of the First Officer's seat would have allowed an electric motor to lower the landing gear. However, the crew did not see that it had popped.

The main factors that led to this happening were the lack of safeguards to prevent accidental opening of circuit breakers, the circuit breaker being in a low position where the flight crew would have difficulty seeing it, LOT's operations center inadequate procedures, and LOT's failure to incorporate a Boeing service bulletin on the prevention of excessive bending in the hydraulic system hose.

The crew was praised by the Polish president for the successful wheels-up landing.
