Summary

The Ocean-class is a Paternian light aircraft carrier developed as part of the Modular Fleet Combat Ship, a series of large military vessels based on a similar hull.

Capabilities

The Ocean-class CVL can accommodate up to 40 aircraft for operational use, with up to 60 if employed as a transport. The carrier is a STOVL type, and typically includes 12 AV-6 Kestrel or F-45D Barracuda V/STOL fighters. The remainder is in the form of helicopters and other rotorcraft.

This includes the SH-90A Lynx ASW/Utility helicopter, CH-48B Pelican and the MV-28B Vulture medium lift tiltrotor. The MV-28B features a rotating wing and folding rotor blades for storage, which allows the type to be embarked and stored aboard the ship. The CH-48B also features folding rotors for the same purpose.

It possesses radars suitable for navigation and multi-function search and tracking systems for naval and air units. It also features navigation sonar, although can be fitted with towed arrays. The vessel features the Nixie decoy and can be fitted with hard-kill anti-torpedo systems.

For self-defense against missiles, the carrier features two Mk 15 Mod 4 Phalanx CIWS, fitted with a 60kW laser system comprised of six 10kW solid state lasers in a single housing. Developed to counter hypersonic anti-ship missiles, it can be installed anywhere a Phalanx gun can be installed. Standard Phalanx or SeaRAM missile systems could be fitted instead. In addition, flares, jammers, and decoys are also carried.

For defense against small craft, the carrier features two 30mm Mk 85 automatic cannons, one on each side. The weapon's high rate and angle of traverse and elevation make it suitable for use against low-flying aircraft, UAVs, and cruise missiles of the subsonic range.

For propulsion, she is fitted with two 15kWh gas turbine generators to power the electrically-driven azipods, providing 20,000hp. The vessel has a top speed of 25 knots, an unrefueled range of 4,000 miles at 22 knots, and an endurance of 60 days. It also features a pair of 5kWh diesel auxiliary power units.
