Designed in late 1969 as a ground-attack and close-air-support (CAS) aircraft, the Yakovlev Yak-36NS, NATO reporting name "Freehand-K", first entered service with the Red Air Force on October 8, 1972. While not the fastest plane in the skies, speed was not a top priority for the designers at the Yakovlev OKB. The aircraft was slowed by the thick (thicc) armor plating encasing the cockpit, fuel tanks, and engines. After seeing combat in many conflicts, including the Six-Day War and various other Middle-Eastern conflicts, the Yak-36NS was eventually phased out of service by the more advanced Su-25 Frogfoot, and in 1980 the last 36NS was retired from Russian aerial service. However, countries like Latvia and Lithuania still used the 36NS up until the late 1990s, and one still performs border patrol duties in Estonia to this day.
