In the 1960s, the Italian company OTO Melara began work on a tank destroyer with a limited turret traverse. The design was heavily influenced by promising developments in German vehicles, and plans were made to incorporate design elements from both American and German vehicles. It was envisaged that the vehicle would be equipped with a magazine loading system that had been successfully used on naval guns. Another unique feature of the vehicle was that the driver would be placed in a turret with a limited gun traverse. Eventually, work on this tank destroyer was discontinued due to its dependence on its conceptual predecessor. When all work on the MBT-70 was cancelled, the concept design was discontinued and the vehicle was never built.
