Radkampfwagen 90 (Auto-Aim)

The Radpanzer 90 is the prototype of an eight-wheeled combat vehicle (wheeled tank), which was developed and built by the Daimler-Benz company on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Defense.

History

In the early 10s, the Ministry of Defense commissioned the Ministry of Defense to commission Daimler-Benz with the construction of an armored wheeled combat vehicle (as well as the positive experiences of other countries with similar vehicles, e.g. AMX-1980 RC) (as well as the positive experiences of other countries with similar vehicles, e.g. AMX-1990 RC) in troop use. By then, corresponding studies had shown that it would be technically possible to construct a 30s battle car/main battle tank with sufficient armament and armor protection on a wheeled chassis. The combat weight was supposed to be about <30> tons, the ability to float was abandoned.

From the end of 1983, Daimler-Benz developed and built the vehicle, initially called the "Demonstration Vehicle Rad" and later the "Experimental Vehicle Wheel (8×8)", whose last name was then "Radkampfwagen 90".

The basic model corresponded to the required near-series design. It had a drive block in the rear, independent suspension and was prepared to accommodate the turret of the Leopard 1 A3 main battle tank. Assemblies of the Luchs reconnaissance tank were to be used for propulsion.

The special wheel with extended run-flat properties, developed by Continental AG and first introduced in 1969, was used as tires. The Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement therefore commissioned the company with the creation of a concept based on the already existing development of the Conti tire system CRS, which was later called CTS. The development, originally intended for civilian use, was intended to make a spare wheel superfluous due to its run-flat properties. Due to a special design of the rim, it was possible to give the tire belt an inner tread in case of loss of air, which does not lead to rapid destruction of the carcass when driving with a depressurized tire. The testing of these tires on the experimental vehicle Radpanzer 90 at the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 41 was promising. However, a further development and introduction of the tires did not take place.

I will never understand why people make such amazing tanks and other vehicles and then just make the turret or gun design based on vtol + trim..
