Marathon Cargo Freighter

53.4k Ephwurd  6.4 years ago
Auto Credit Based on destroyerP's No fuselage challenge (ENDED)

Sorry for this crappy build

Instructions

  • Throttle for hover (24-25% for neutral)
  • Pitch for forward/ reverse
  • Roll to turn.
  • LandingGear to rotate auxiliary engines

The Marathon series of cargo freighters are the most common hauler-type ships to be seen in Continuum trade routes. It can carry 30 standard cargo containers (same size as of today's shipping containers) along its spine and is lightly-armed with two laser cannons and two chainguns. It also has very good crew accommodations for long voyages, making it a useful temporary spaceborne house. While Marathon-class freighters are known for their speed, they are incredibly despised by seasoned merchants and those who can afford afford better ships, as the Marathon's lackluster defense system and poor hull construction makes it an easy target for pirates, especially when travelling through Fringe routes where ambushes are set-up, hidden away from the prying eyes of Navy patrol ships. Rookie spacefarers who seek to become traders are often warned against the use of these ships for their safety's sake, leading to a massive decline in the sales of the Marathon series in its first year.

@BeryllCorp the fuel tank has infinite fuel and zero mass

@Ephwurd last question.. how come the empty weight of this ship is negative? how did you do that?

    6.4 years ago
  • Profile image
    53.4k Ephwurd

@BeryllCorp it doesn't float, it just has about 70000 drag points making it very un-aerodynamic, slowing its fall

@ThomasRoderick when the aux engines are perpendicular to the main body, it causes a lot of drag amd the CoM moves that's why it pitches up

@Ephwurd Why does the ship pitch up when accelerating if the "Landing Gear" group if activated? Is that just aerodynamics?

@Ephwurd i made a space ship but I couldn't make it float while stopped in mid air like your ships does. please share your techniques.... :)

@Ephwurd hello, how did you manage to make this thing float even without throttle? it only descends at around 30mph when stopped at mid air and without engine throttle.

@ThomasRoderick the auxiliary engines (the ones that flip when you retract the landing gear) are purely cosmetic. You use throttle to gain altitude. As of the prolonged burn, I originally set the engine multiplier to 10 but I wanted to give this guy a slight disadvantage so I kicked it up to 100.

Suddenly understood the reason why nobody in-lore uses this ship... the controls are mediocre at best, and it takes forever to descend... the auxilaries are useful for gaining altitude, but prolonged burns could flip theship over... Also, how does the auxilaries work? I didn't see any parts that contributes to the auxilaries.

Really cool! Will test this when I am back.

@ThomasRoderick a prime example would be this. Although it is a military ship, Core frieghters would often share the same aesthetic minus the military-grade armor and weapons.

@ThomasRoderick Core freighters store their cargo inside their hull, and is placed near the bow of the ship to prevent any blind spots. They also have a solid hull construction, keeping all components such as engines and weapon emplacements as close to the main body as possible to make it more compact.

@Ephwurd Ok, gotcha. Nice setting, but what type of transports do core worlds use? According to the background story of this ship, it seems that these ships are rarely, if ever used in the core worlds.

@ThomasRoderick the Fringe is basically the outskirts of Continuum space. Unlike Core worlds, Fringe Worlds do not have wormhole gates for instantaneous travel, meaning merchants would have to rely on their ship's jump drives to get to a Fringe world. Fringe space is often filled with worlds who have refused to join the Continuum and have fallen to barbarism, thus the high presence of pirates and outlaws in these areas. Despite their refusal to join the Continuum, they are still considered members, that's why trade between Core and Fringe worlds exist. As of why some routes aren't constantly patrolled, the Continuum just got back from a war, and most of its more powerful ships have been spent in battle. The outlaws have also learned how to combat/board the smaller patrol-dedicated corvettes and cruisers, making some Navy captains hesitant of conducting patrols in these areas.

I think normal traders don't need to go to places where navies do not patrol... What are those "fringe routes"? Are they shortcuts?

@spefyjerbf well this build turned out just fine, plus I find it one of my best-handling ships (if I tone down the thrust). Thanks again! I'm definitely making a fuselaged version of this sometime soon.

I'll admit that, quality wise, it isn't as good as your normal stuff. Still, I think that looks good, considering that you didn't use fuselages. Good job, anyway!

@spefyjerbf thank you! I didn't expect you to like this, as I literally rushed through this build to practice xml-modding with the traditional parts.
