Savoia S.21 Folgore - Porco Rosso/Studio Ghibli

[Here is my entirely redesigned and updated build of the iconic seaplane from the Studio Ghibli film "Porco Rosso." My skills as a builder have improved since my last attempt at this aircraft, and I was unhappy with several aspects of that version. What had been planned as an update turned into a full rebuild, taking advantage of the updates and improved building techniques that have been introduced to SP in the past few years. This is the "rebuilt" version from the second half of the film. Lore below:]

The S.21 "Folgore" was an experimental fighter aircraft, originally designed and built by Savoia-Marchetti. The design was based on the S.21R, a racing flying boat built for the 1921 Schneider Cup, and the M.33, another racer entered in the Cup in 1925. Both aircraft proved difficult to control, and did not find competitive success. While the initial design of the S.21F looked promising it proved equally challenging to pilot and only a single test aircraft was ever constructed.

It was subsequently acquired by the famed bounty hunter and WWI ace Marco "Porco Rosso" Pagot, and gained notoriety throughout the Adriatic.

Damaged in combat with American pilot and film star Donald Curtis, the S.21F was redesigned by Fio Piccolo and fully rebuilt by Piccolo SPA of Milan. This version features a forward jump seat for a flight engineer. Note that the Port machine gun has been removed to provide the necessary space and weight savings.
