SPACE: 1999 - Eagle Transporter

48.8k Baldovino  5.8 years ago

Small video

I think this is the first Eagle Transporter in SimplePlanes. It has no wings, is integrally jet-sustained, flies, and is compatible with the autopilot.
It was entirely handmade, and not obtained by converting pre-existing 3D files.
1 - detachment of the cargo module (NEVER release the module in flight. Release only with the Eagle on the ground and stop)
Trim UP - Vertical thrust. Just over 50% for take-off and level flight. Small adjustments will be necessary.
All the rest of the commands are standard, but use delicacy and prudence. The lack of wings and gyro stabilization make it a delicate balance craft.

Although it is in effect a replica, there are various differences between this model and that used for TV shooting. Both for the lack of suitable pieces in the game, and for the lack of information on the original, and also for my choice to remain under 1000 parts.
SIMPLIFICATIONS: The tubular frame has fewer trusses in the upper spine, and some parts around the engines are missing. Many details (like the side doors of the cargo module) were reduced to mere idealizations, or they would have required hundreds of parts on their own.
ADAPTATIONS: Details such as the legs of the undercarriage are different, but the need to make them compatible with the landings sometimes not very delicate of a "plane" without wings required this. The four boxes containing the legs were impossible to reproduce exactly, but they are a good approximation, for example. Even the front cabin is impossible to get.
RECONSTRUCTION OF FANTASY: Some things are impossible to find from the images. Details like everything under the tubular frame in the forward and aft sections have been added following imagination and logic, but they are certainly different from what has become visible in the images on the internet.

The auto pilot does not even work

@Christopher2106 I must add a explaination: There is NO mobile surface, so TRIM is useless to balance the ship, unless you made the right manual adjustments. The VTOL thrusters are not mobile. They point only down, and the horizontal component is added with another engine.

@Christopher2106 the VTOL slider are set to center from autopilot. It does not work beter than TRIM as precision of tuning, but make it incompatible with IA.

The problem with having the vtol thrusters set to the trim is the ship will pull up constantly you should make a updated version where the vtol thrusters are set to the vtol slider but other than that it handles like a dream

@ChiChiWerx Yes, cargo pod do not change COM (it has a total mass of 0) but change the drag. Whitout it the drag and the thrust forward are no longer alligned, and a overthrow torque born. This problem is more visible if the speed is high. If you keep the main engine at 25% is barely noticeable.

The phisic engine of this game is awesome, a simplest one will not have those "problems" (but I love to deal with them)

Yes, seems to fly great at 100% forward thrust, slightly (2 degrees or so) nose up and no vertical thrust, around 360 mph or so. Doesn’t act the same without the cargo pod, just flips over end over end!

@ChiChiWerx Just made a quick test, yes, no mistery. Without vertical thrust it does not flies, unless you are a 100% orizontal thrust and balance the nose up like a missile. But it's instable and hard to keep at stable altitude. Try to go 30% speed, and cut vertical thrust... and enjoy your rock like fall. :D

BTW it float with no floating blocks or bouyance in any part. ;) Miracles of mass remover.

@ChiChiWerx If you have some degree nose up position, the vertical vector is enough, because many, many pieces are at 0 mass. But usually if you cut the vertical thrust you can see after some second the altitude start to drop

Very strangely, it actually “flies” with zero thrust coming out of the vertical lift engines and the lack of any wings...must be a lifting body 🤔

Wow, very cool. Very easy to fly, landed on Beast first attempt and no drama.
