Description:

Users:
CCCP (Soviet Navy)

Built: Unknown
In Commission: 1969-1984

At a top speed of 44.7 Knots (51.4 mph/82.8 km/h) Project 661 (NATO: Papa Class) was the fastest submarine ever built. Beginning in 1959, the project to develop Project 661 was slowed by a demand for innovation which prohibited reuse of previous methods in submarine design. Originally designated K-162, the sole example built was later renamed K-222 in 1978.

Made seemingly to take the term 'fast attack submarine' to a whole new level, the completed submarine would be the first to have a hull constructed of titanium alloy. Instead of having the typical nuclear reactor with a diesel generator as a backup, Project 661 was built with two compact reactors and a powerful battery to act as a backup.

As fast as the submarine was, it came at a cost with it proving quite noisy at its high speeds with a risk of external damage. Interal vibrations were caused as well, making the ride uncomfortable for the crew inside. Despite its official name, the nickname 'Golden Fish' was allegedly given due to the high price of development and construction. This name mainly referred to the color its titanium hull ultimately took on by the time it was scrapped.

The intended main purpose of Project 661 was to attack carrier groups, likely using its speed to quickly engage, fire off its missiles, then flee to avoid counter attack. Alongside four 533mm torpedo tubes, Project 661 was armed with ten P-70 Amethyst Anti-Ship Cruise missiles. Developed for use as a missile capable of launching while submerged after the missile originally designated for that purpose (the P-120) suffered engine problems which delayed its introduction. The missiles would be stored in tubes located forward of the sail, much like the previous Charlie class submarine. Also like the Charlie Class, the cruise missiles could only be reloaded in port.

With the heavy cost behind it, only one submarine of the Anchar Class would be constructed, with its design likely influencing the future Barrakuda (Sierra) and Lira (Alfa) Classes. in 1980 a maintenance mishap in the shipyard would damage one of the Anchar's reactors in port, putting her out of operation. By 1988 she would be placed in reserve, eventually scrapped in 2010. Due to her design not facilitating the reactors' removal she was unusually dismantled with her fuel and propulsion source still inside.

Despite being the sole boat in her class, K-222 left a legacy not unappreciated by Russian navy veterans, who have proposed using the control cabinet as a monument.

Did my first Remaster! At FLYGUY101's request I redid my Papa class Submarine with all that I've learned up to this point. At some point I discovered that a hidden vtol engine from the original was still present, a ghost of my building past come to haunt me and mess with my ballast control.

Fortunately finding the fuselage piece that held it wasn't to hard, and when i did I could just remove the front and rear sections before copying that piece and putting it all back together. Enjoy!

    @MintLynx
    Thanks!
    Also your driving me nuts!
    Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and so on, are considered as the phonetic alphabet.
    It is used to help people understand what letters are being pronounced through the radio static. It is used mainly by your military personnel and aviators.
    I don't know if you got this already or not, but thanks for bronze!

    @VerldVarIII During the Cold war, especially the early to mid cold war, Soviet Submarines were classified by NATO using the Military Alphabet. With examples being the Whiskey, Delta, Charlie, Romeo, Sierra, and many others. Only in a few examples such as the Akula, Typhoon, and more recent subs such as the Borei class has NATO not used the military alphabet for classification of Russian Submarines.
