Description

Japanese medium tank of the Second World War. It was created in 1943 as a further development of the Chi-He tank, differing from it with a new, more powerful, 75-mm gun in a new turret. The most advanced serial Japanese tank of the Second World War. A total of 60 to 166 Chi-Nu tanks were produced during the serial production, according to various sources. They did not take part in the fighting, because they entered the units intended for the defense of the Japanese islands from the landing of US troops that never took place.

"Chi-Nu" differed from its predecessor, "Chi-He", mainly only by a new turret with a more powerful gun, the rest of the tank systems were not significantly redesigned. At the same time, "Chi-Nu", like "Chi-He", inherited from "Chi-Ha" and "Shinhoto Chi-Ha" without major changes a significant part of the nodes and the design solutions applied to them.

The tank had a standard layout for Japanese tanks of that period, with the placement of the propulsion system in the stern, and the transmission compartment in the frontal part of the car. The crew of the tank consisted of five people — the driver and the radio operator, who were located in the control department, and the gunner, loader and commander, who were in a three-person turret.

The Chi-Nu was equipped with a V-shaped 12-cylinder four-stroke Mitsubishi Type 100 air-cooled diesel engine with a capacity of 240 hp at 2000 rpm. Two fuel tanks were located in the engine compartment, under the engine.
The Chi-Nu transmission, like the Chi-He, has not undergone any noticeable changes in comparison with the Chi-Ha. It consisted of:

Multi-disc main dry friction clutch mounted on the engine.
The primary gearbox, which served for the possibility of a lower placement of the gimbal transmission.
The driveshaft.
A four-speed (eight-speed) manual transmission with a demultiplier located in the frontal part of the tank, in the control compartment.
Two two-stage turning mechanisms, each of which consisted of a planetary gearbox, locking clutch, support and stop brakes. The turning mechanisms were located on both sides of the gearbox, partly in the armored casings carried outside the hull.
