The Dread pirate ship Revenge takes off HOTOL as most non-VTOL planes do.
Throttle up to a minimum of 25% to take off and fly normally in atmosphere.
Once up, any throttle setting and use pitch, trim, roll and yaw to fly.
Once the altitude is sufficiently high, use pitch, yaw and some roll for RCN's (reaction control nozzles).
AG 8 (de)activates the gyroscope. (sometimes useful) .
AG 1 initiates the missile system,18 interceptors. Gatling rail guns are always active.
AG5 rear slowing chutes.
AG6 rear slowing chutes.
AG7 landing chutes. (For those who don't feel like crashing into the ground because of piloting error.)
But actually even that should not be a worry, as the Dread pirate ship Revenge, like it's ancient predecessor, is a master of the high seas as well as air and space.
