Short Description

The Project 785 small missile ship was designed to operate close to shore as a defensive unit. To counter large ships, it was armed with heavy anti-ship missiles, and to counter smaller targets and aircraft, it had a fairly powerful artillery armament for its class.

History

Project 785 small missile ships were designed to replace rapidly aging coastal defence ships in the early 1980s. The main technical task was to deploy the new Zira anti-ship cruise missile on the ship, which the engineers successfully coped with.

The first ship was built and launched in 1983 and was commissioned in 1984. The ships were mostly stationed at small military bases away from large naval forces to ensure the defence capability of remote regions. A version 785-3 with other missiles and radar weapons was also exported.

The ship was used in combat only once in 2001, when it intercepted a pirate hijacked vessel. After several hits from the main calibre on the intruder, the ship lost motion and was immobilised, which allowed to wait for the boarding party.

In 2004, several ships were upgraded to the 785M, with new electronics and a new guidance system, allowing the use of Zira-M, Zira-MA and Zira-B missiles, which have a longer range and the ability to attack ground targets, giving the ships offensive capabilities.

Warning

The missiles are heavy and with full ammunition, attempting to turn at full speed could flip the ship over. Reduce speed before manoeuvring.
