INTRODUCTION

The Mil Mi-24 ( NATO designations "Hind") is a low-capacity attack and transport helicopter produced by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant in 1970 and operated since 1972 by the Soviet Air Force, by his successors and by more than thirty other nations. Its export name is Mi-35.

HISTORY

In the early seventies, while the US Army concluded that the AH-56 Cheyenne attack helicopter should be replaced by a new, more advanced type (the AH-64 Apache), the USSR put the Mil Mi-24 into service. The Mi-24 Hind passed from the flight test board in 1968, in less than 18 months, it is different from the Apache and Cheyenne, possibly its closest equivalent to the West is the Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk, developed between 1970 and 1972, using the popular and cost-effective S-61 / H-3 series engine and rotor installation design as a basis.

The "Hind" also has some components in common with the main Soviet helicopter of that time, the Mil Mi-8, and, like the S-67, it has a rotor system of the conventional type, of the fully articulated type. In other words, use one of the most traditional and most tested methods of attaching the rotor blades to his head. It is certainly an effective way and that the development involves many difficulties, by incorporating some more advanced functions, in order to obtain greater maneuverability.

The first models were sent to the Armed Forces for review in 1971. The Hind-A had a number of problems: side rotation, gun sights and limited visibility for the pilot. A major overhaul of the helicopter's front section solved most of these problems.
