1999 BMW V12 LMR

18.0k BYardley  yesterday
Auto Credit Based on BYardley's LMR 3.5

It's the year 1999, legendary automobile manufacturer BMW in partnership with the Williams formula 1 team decides to build a machine capable of taking down some of the greatest racecars in the world at the unforgiving 24 hours of le mans, This is the BMW V12 LMR.

So I've been working on this for almost a year now (just 1 month away) it took me this long to finish because my working time on this was 2 hours a week on average also I tried to experiment with new things that I want to feature in my future projects, and boy! this is full of new stuff as a result of the experiments (in the details section down below you'll find some) anyway building this beautiful machine from 1999 was a huge pain but I loved every part of it. Enjoy.

In terms of specs I'll say it's 94% accurate, it's kind of hard to find exact data on certain things due to the lack of Information on the Internet about the V12 LMR, this is a problem with most pre-2000 racecars it's so hard to find exact and accurate informations about those cars no matter how popular they are, (most of the data was obtained from Project cars 2 and Gran turismo 6).

WIKIPEDIA
This is the BMW V12 LMR exactly the number 15 car that was driven to BMWs first and only overall victory in the 1999 24 hours of le mans by Yannick Dalmas, Pierluigi Martini and Joachim Winkelhock, after the triumph BMW Motorsport decided not to race the car in the following 24 hours of le mans and pulled out of the class all together.

I think it's safe to say that this model is filled to the core with details "almost" a 1 to 1 replica in terms of details but it still lacks some things due to SP limitations and my own limitations, here are some of the details I consider worth talking about.
.

The engine in this vehicle is the BMW S70/3 Naturally aspirated V12 engine that could generate up to 580 horse power to the rear wheels through an X-trac 6 speed manual transmission, the engine is mounted on an MR configuration means it is placed in the middle of the car and delivers the power to the rear wheels.
.

All the stickers and sponsors that were featured on the real car can be seen in this model except a few like the driver names and small texts.

There's a ton of details that are actually mechanical some of them provide performance some just visuals.
.

The gear shifting animation, this car has a real working gear shifting animation it works this way, when the car hits a specific speed a rotor rotates the gear stick in the cockpit and another rotor rotates it back to the center making it seem like a real working sequential gear shifter, this systems repeats until the car reaches 6th gear, the same goes with the dashboard this time it's with pistons instead of a rotor here's a picture on how it works, I know for sure there's an efficient way to do the gear shifting animations, but I decided to do it this way because I don't want to fall into a nightmare of funky trees (at least not at the moment).

This car has costom wheels, these wheels were made using fuselages and rotors that spins the wheel following every move of the tire making the illusion that it's a connected wheel.

Obviously the steering wheel rotates in the direction of the with the wheels and the pedals do respond to inputs whether it is braking or accelerating.

In the beginning of 2025 I promised myself that I'll build this car, I don't even remember why I made that promise, anyway I started building this in march 2025 and now it's finally done and I am really happy with the results, I wouldn't have had even liked the BMW V12 LMR if it wasn't for nostalgia, playing Gran Turismo 4 back in the days made me appreciate a lot of cars that I wouldn't have had liked (this car included), even back in the days I didn't really prefer driving the LMR in Gran Turismo I mean yeah I drove it a fair amount but it wasn't my cup of tea and not my most loved LM car, that title went to the 787B and the Pescarolo GV5, yet after growing up and learning the story of the LMR my views on it has changed because back then I took this car for granted and didn't really care to look it up or read about it, it was just an open cockpit racecar and there weren't much interesting things about it, learning the story of the LMR wasn't the only reason as to why i began to love it, i think the main reason is because it has turned into a nostalgic piece of art to me, all the 90s and early 2000s race cars are actually.

Thanks to MVC for the Tutorial on how to make costom rims,

Thanks to Gran Turismo 6 and Project cars 2 for providing bases for me to make estimations regarding the car's real performance,

Thanks to Wikipedia, Car Crushers Forum and Wikimedia Commons for the blueprints and other general info,

Thanks to all the websites that preserved the old photos of this legendary machine which I used as reference.

Peace be upon you ✌
