Streamliner challenge (closed, prizes are being given)

11.7k airlinerbuilder  1.8 years ago

The 1930's, what a time to be alive.
A decade marked by change, from the recovery of the economy to rising political tensions.
The plane would see the start of "the golden age of air travel" and the train surely wasn't left behind, because this was the decade of "the railroad streamliner"
and in this challenge you'll have to build one (since I noticed that there's an extreme lack of them on the site).

-What is a streamliner?
Definition from Wikipedia:

A streamliner is a vehicle incorporating streamlining in a shape providing reduced air resistance. The term is applied to high-speed railway trainsets of the 1930s to 1950s. As part of the Streamline Moderne trend, the term was applied to passenger cars, trucks, and other types of light-, medium-, or heavy-duty vehicles.

-The almighty rules

-1. the train needs to carry passengers, so if you build a locomotive you should build at least 1 or 2 coaches that match its design and post them separately as unlisted (with a link to them in the description of the locomotive).
Also, even if they're basically 1 coach railcars are allowed.
-2. the train must fit the era in terms of performance so they must have a top speed under 220km/h and they must have accurate parts (for example no single pantographs for electrics)
-3. your build must be original, no modifying of someone else's build
-4. both fictionals and replicas are allowed but as always i encourage making a fictional build
-5. the description must have a "Lore"/"Description" section where you describe the history of the model wether the train being fictional or a replica.
-6. the part number must be between 100 and 3000
-7. MUST BE A SUCCESSOR so download this and make the train with the cockpit that comes with it.
-8. one entry per player. BUT if your entry gets disqualified i will allow you to modify it or build a new one.
-9. the train itself needs to be built only with XML and it must work on either of the following mods:
SPR-Map Plugin
destroyerP's Railway Mod
Railway mod
(If you can't download these mods i'll make an exception)

-The judjement criteria
all of the points I list here will have a score that changes based on the design being fictional or a replica. I'll give your train a score both on a 0/90 scale and on a 0/10 scale once I announce the winners.
1. Look: does it fit the era and the look of art deco/streamline moderne?
score: (0/25 fictional) (0/25 replica)
2. performance: how fun is it to drive?
score: (0/25 fictional) (0/25 replica)
3. level of detail: how much detail went in the design?
score: (0/25 fictional) (0/40 replica)
4. (fictional only) lore quality: How much thought went into the fictional lore? score: (0/15 fictional) (0/0 replica)

(keep in mind that: the higher the max score per point, the harsher i'll be on it)

-The juicy prizes
1° place= 50 upvotes
2nd place= 25 upvotes
3rd place= 10 upvotes
partecipation prize= 1 upvote and if possible 1 spotlight

-Deadline
you have time until the 10th of September

hope you'll join this, have fun and let's build :)

Welp, it seems that I couldn't catch up to the deadline even with 1/4 of a train already done lol

@Scratchoza yeah maybe it's a better idea, i'll modify the rule to fit this

@airlinerbuilder (Reffering to rule 1) For locomotives that are standalone, can we just submit the coaches as a separate build? I think it's more practical and they can be spawned as AI and be coupled to the locomotive anyways

@BoeyingOfficial Sorry to say this but It needs to have coaches. I did that to put every build on the same level, May It be a locomotive or a multiple unit

Does it really need to have coaches or is a locomotive enough? The coaches will make the part count very high and make the build laggy.

@PapaKernels you should be able to use them but do some measurements of the loading gauge and the gauge of the rails on the mods i linked

@airlinerbuilder All im hoping is that i can use the blueprints, and the truck width will be accurate 😂. Should be right?

I would love to participate but I’m not sure that I can make the deadline…

@asteroidbook345 sorry man but i don't think you can build It, it's way too fast to respect the "accuracy" rule and It was made a little too late

    1.8 years ago
  • Profile image

@JedediahTheDrooman i just checked but i don't think that it Is allowed. The rules say It needs to have a streamlined design so i don't think it fits maybe you can later add your own streamlined shroud on It and make a fictional design

    I have a idea ⋯
ChinaRailway’s RenMin class steam locomotive can reach the speed of 120km/h but not in a shape providing reduced air resistance so is it a steamliner?

I May join, but ive never made a steamliner

You have ignited my old passion for trains 😂. Probably going to make a generic prr k4, probably going to be #1361, then ill retrofit with the streamliner kit so it can be entered.
