Originally designed to address the growing threat posed by three Messerschmidt variants, the end of the war saw the J42 shelved for several years.

As the Korean War escalated, the need for more capable bomber escort saw the dust removed and a few prototypes built before eventually being shelved again when the bean counters cited fuel efficiency concerns.

The few pilots that got behind the stick praised it's virtues as a balanced and capable dogfighter, with good speed and general attitude.

It is even rumored that John Boyd commented he'd trade his Sabre for a Big Mouth any day, he would help design the F-16 only a few years later.
