The Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO) is a tracked transport vehicle operated by the German Army during World War II.
On the Eastern Front, along with the T-34 tank, it was the mud on the Russian soil that plagued the Germans. The ground, bogged down by melting snow, blocked the progress of trucks and halted the logistics of the German army.
The Germans, keenly aware of the need for transport vehicles that could travel over rough terrain, ordered the Steyr company to develop new supply vehicles.
In response, Steyr developed a tracked transport vehicle that was unusually simple for a German military vehicle.
The crawler was equipped with four large rolling wheels on each side, which were suspended together on a single suspension. The driver's cabin was a simple one, adapted from the body of a Steyr 1500A truck.
Although the vehicle was called by the unassuming name of Raupenschlepper Ost (German for “Eastern Road Tractor”), it was used for many purposes, such as transporting supplies, towing anti-tank guns, and transporting personnel. Its wide crawler tracks and robust construction made it difficult to break, and it was able to deliver supplies reliably even over rough terrain.
It was used not only on the Eastern Front, but also on many battlefields, including the Western Front.
Its only drawback was its slow speed. The maximum speed was estimated to be 30 km/h, but due to the terrible noise and vibration, the practical speed limit was said to be around 17 km/h. Because of its slowness, it was unable to keep up with the speed of the retreat from Russia, and many RSOs were doomed to be left on the roadside.
It is said that more than 27,000 cars were produced. Some of the vehicles that survived the war were used as snowmobiles.
