Blackburn B.20
First off my gratitude to RamboJutter who tested and mended this design. The fact it flies and floats is all down to Rambo and his skills. Many thanks old boy!
-Semi scale replica (i was fiddling with the concept and accidentally got it to work so the working mechanism dictated the rest of the build)
-AG2 retracts/lowers floats and pontoon
“Flying boat or float-plane? Well, why not do both.....?” - is how I imagine the conversation went along in the pipe smoke filled office at Blackburn’s design department one morning. By utilising the best features of both configurations the B.20 was designed for drastically improving the performance of flying boats. This unique design centred around a retractable central pontoon and two wing floats that once airborne, would be housed in a notch in the fuselage - thus becoming a more aerodynamic shape. The accompanying wing floats would also fold up becoming part of the wing tips, much like on the Catalina.
One prototype was completed in Dumbarton in March 1940 but crashed in April during a test run due to severe vibration caused by aileron flutter. Following the crash it was determined by the Air Ministry the concept had been proven however Blackburn’s resources were dedicated to the war effort.
I think the concept is a neat example of good ol’ British design innovation and should be represented in SP. Happy landings!

Thanks! I reckon coastal command would have been interested - I made a coastal command livery version to view the concept I had in mind. @8bitgamer33
I wonder what this plane would actually have been used for.
Cheers! @GhostHTX it is a rather novel concept and couldn’t resist!
All in hand my good man! After I finish a series of distractions of course! Thanks! @Mrwhiskers85
Totally bloody agree! @doge should at least send an upvote your way. This is a bloody lovely build.
You should do the Blackburn B.44 concept float fighter as a follow up ;)
Thank you kindly! @mikoyanster
It looks floaty-like to me... :) This was more a proof of concept build rather than a highly-Uber-detailed replica. I alluded to it in the preamble - i was just toying with the mechanism of this particular design and hence why it’s semi-scale. @doge
I was just expecting a bit better shape @Tang0five
Omg sorry for that typo back there where I said ‘no one!’ instead of ‘no problem!’
Oh I see what you mean about the successor post. I saved the inputs you made as they made sense and just rolled on that. @RamboJutter
@Tang0five no problem!
Cheers, glad you like this little quirky number! @BaconRoll @Sgtk @Serkonda @Delphinos
Thank you! @doge - what’s sort of design had you in mind ref the floats? Good luck getting to class!
Nonsense! @RamboJutter invaluable input as always! (And as always, humbly indebted to you indeed!)
Thank you, glad you enjoy it! @Treadmill103
Oh and rainbow I might need ur help for a little pet project of mine this weekend becuse of the lack of refrence matireal and the fact that it's realy hard to make in sp
I'm making a fictional and a replica version of it
Sorry I for got m8 was changing classes had like no time @RamboJutter
@tang0five thanks for the praise, you didn't need to have this as a successor to my tweaks though, tbf I didn't do much and the credit for design and build should be yours. What made you change the colour scheme? Poor @doge gave you 8/10 but no upvote...
Score 8/10
I think the floats need a redesign
