Radial Engine Challenge [CLOSED]

4,049 SchadeAircaftCompany  1.6 years ago

A new challenge! Build a fictional or replica aircraft with either a radial or rotary engine. Here’s the kicker, you can not use the radial engine in the game alone, must build your own. Era can be anything from WW1 to Vietnam, it can be a fighter, bomber, even an air ship, as long as it has the radial engine. In cases of aircraft like the Fw-190, Sea Fury, or Ki-100 where the engine is almost completely obscured by the cowling and nose cone, you can go without piston detail on the engine but make sure it’s known its a radial in some way.

DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 15th

What is a radial or rotary engine?
Radial and rotary engines have their pistons configured in a circle around a central plate. The biggest difference between the two being the radial engine is stationary and the rotary spins the whole engine.

Scoring and Rewards
Scoring will be based on four categories with a possible 10 points per category, the categories being Description (telling the history or story of the aircraft), Realism/Creativity (how close is the aircraft to the original or can your fictional aircraft be feasible), Details (VR cockpit is optimal, not necessary, but insignia, exhausts, air inlets, etc. help a lot), and Flight Characteristics (how easy is it to fly).
Rewards are as follows:
1st place receives 15 upvotes + 1 spotlight (if possible)
2nd place receives 10 upvotes + 1 spotlight (if possible)
3rd place receives 5 upvotes + 1 spotlight (if possible)

Any stolen designs will be disqualified, all good designs will receive an automatic upvote (doesn’t count to the ones you win). Good luck to all, and excited to see what is made.

@SchadeAircaftCompany I’m done with mine. Can I make more? Or only 1?

@PapaKernels yeah everyone does that, but I love watching the pistons spinning on rotary engines and how loud they are from a lack of an exhaust, since you can’t have one really when the piston is spinning a couple hundred revolutions per minute

@SchadeAircaftCompany oooooo, ok. I think i know what your talking about now. My auto tech brain went straight to the automotive application 😂.

@PapaKernels the Wankel engine and the rotary engine I’m talking about are really different, something like the Le Rhône, Überosel U9, Gnome engines of WWI

Rotary engines (otherwise known as a Wankel engine) uses a triangular shaped peice that rotates around in a ovular shell. For a radial engine challenge i dont think it'll work 😂. I know its easy to mix them up but my automotive technician brain had to say something 😂. Interesting challenge tho. Idk if ill join or not but maybe.

@LieutenantSOT if you can make it look like a conceivable thing go ahead, sounds like a really cool and creative concept

I have something badass for this challenge...
    .
I'm making a mixed propulsion aircraft that is like the Ryan FR-1 and the Airacobra P-39 had a baby. The radial engine is installed in the center of the aircraft. Is this applicable? I planned on making the cowling and everything so it would be known it is a radial

@Sakorsky just the look of the engine, like the pistons and crank case and all that, so you can use a normal engine with prop for power but have to make your own engine around it

Do we have to make the propeller ourselves too? It seems to be unclear for me.

@TWDDerSharkmarine as long as there’s a realistic way to “keep the engine cool”, go ahead, like how the Focke-Wolf had that fan behind the prop

God i can be a massive troll and put an aerodynamic cowling on the nose to make my plane not look like a radial
