Convair B-36D Peacemaker

FINALLY. This project took forever.

During late World War Two, the USAAF (United States Army Air Forces) needed a super long range intercontinental bomber that could strike Japan, or later, the USSR (Soviet Union). By the time the war ended, a design was made for a huge, 6-engine bomber. This bomber was designed by the Consolidated Vultee Air Corporation (Convair). A prototype, the XB-36, was constructed in 1945 with 6 3,000 HP engines to be a test bed. It was approved by the USAAF, and 2 more were ordered.
By 1947, the Cold War started, and jet engines were on the rise. The B-36B model that was already in production was halted, and the addition of 4 jet engines was added to new builds, and retrofitted into the old ones. The B-36D was the designation of this model. It had 4 bomb bays, and a top speed of 435 MPH. And, a Ferry range of 10,000 nautical miles.

B-36B (no jet engines)

B-36J (jet engines; no front guns)

Later, more variants were made. The last production model being the B-36J. There are a few still in museums today. None of which airworthy, which is a shame.
In 1952, the now-formed USAF needed a long-range jet-based bomber in the event of a Soviet attack. The B-36 was retrofitted with a new nose and new swept wings. This was redesignated the YB-60. The one completed prototype is on display in... Nebraska? Anyways, it was faster, and could hold almost 20 tons more explosives than the B-52, but it lost because of maintenance and handling issues. The B-36 has since then been out of service. The movie "Strategic Air Command" shows a real one flying, and it honestly is really amazing. This is the largest Piston-Driven aircraft ever built, and I love it. I put as much as I could into this, and I certainly could have done more, but I am super busy right now.

Weapons:

  • 4 20mm autocannons (2 in nose, 2 in tail)
  • 8 2,000 pound bombs (2 per bomb bay)

Controls:

  • VTOL up: Flaps
  • Activation Group 1: Jet Engines
  • Activation Group 2: Open Bomb Bay
  • Activation Group 3: Wheel Steering (VTOL to turn)
  • Activation Group 7: Drogue Chute

I hope y'all enjoy! This was my (literally) biggest project yet!

Side Notes:

  • HUGEEE thanks to @PapaKernels for helping me out with the screenshot and the report on how well the aircraft handled. I am in debt to them.
  • I will be HEAVILY modifying this to make my B-36X "Expeller," so stay tuned for that >:)

Oh, and the reason this is so light is because it has a minimal loadout. The real one was close to 410,000 pounds when fully loaded with 86,000 pounds of nuclear bombs (max speed of 435 when at minimal equipment)

YES. The roll is realistic. The pitch... a little too strong. But all and all, I'm really proud of this.
Using Yaw will help with turning/roll. And yes, this can fly with just propellers, but take off with the jets because the props have a little trouble at sea level :)

@captainlevi820 I tested it multiple times with and without jet engines at Wright... it should be able to take off.
Pull up hard until it lifts off at about 206 mph. If you have jet engines, put the flaps down and the trim down, and then it takes off at around 180 mph

@AntiAirNuri first off, thank you for your feedback.
Yes, the propellers needed to be modded in order to work (there are a LOT of drag points) and they still are underpowered when 1/3 of the original drag points are present. I and yes, the B-36A and B models are just propeller. But later on, jet engines were fitted when the USAAF became the USAF. Every model D and up had jet engines to assist with higher speeds, higher altitudes, and shorter take offs. The C model was never built, but it looked weird

And yeah, I tried a different style for the wings. I needed them thinner at the back, and it turned into this lol. It came out better than it could have, but I still could have done better. The flaps... lol... yeah. They would be a bit longer is the issue, but I had no room and it already was to scale. Either way, it still assists with take-offs.

I have not that much knowledge of B-36s. So I can't judge how the plane flies, but the stock engine power of the propellers seemed a bit off. Isn't the regular version fitted with these engines and without the jets? I should look more into that later though.

But to be honest, while the paneling for the bomb bay is pretty nice, the wings just don't cut it. The tips have these sizeable difference with the base, the trailing edge has some panelling I don't understand, and the flaps are a bit weird
