A few words

So, yeah, thanks for 1k guys (yes, I know it's been a week)! When you chose to upvote my aircraft/livery change, no matter for what reason, you motivated me to carry on doing what I'm doing. With about 1 month remaining in the school holidays, the time I have to work on projects is getting shorter. Maybe next year, one plane may only appear every 3 weeks or maybe even a month.

Also thanks to the 27 people who follow me, even though they definitely have no idea who I am (I hope not!). The "20th anniversary" logo at the back of the plane's a reference to that.

Edit: I just hit 30 followers! Thanks guys!

With that, enjoy my Silver Special (and the photos in the below description)!

RCP Engineering, a company at the very forefront of engineering, officially releases its latest airliner, the D-03!

27 November 2012

Origins of the D-03

The RCP, being in the ocean, is made of a bunch of islands. Most of these islands, despite being tiny, are quite populated because someone decided to scatter industrial areas and shipyards all over the island chain for no particular reason (other than maximising space, boosting the economy and providing more jobs, but those aren't important).

To go between these islands, and get stuff and people to Main City, you obviously need planes. Currently, a ferry journey between Stork Island and Tokua Island takes 3 whole hours, unacceptable if people live and work on these separate islands.

The issue with planes, however, is that they need runways. However, on the aforementioned tiny islands, where less than 5% of land is actually flat, building an airport is virtually impossible. Sure, you could reclaim land in the middle of the coral-filled bays or build a giant barge, but both taxpayers and environmentalists wouldn't be very happy about it...

Therefore, in May of 2008, the visionaries at RCP Engineering came up with a brilliant solution: instead of having inconvenient asphalt runways, why not use the water as a runway instead? They looked to the existing Beriev Be-200 Altair, developed by the Soviet Union in 1989 as a seaplane airliner, which continues in service to this day. The designers set to work quickly, coming up with a design largely similar to the Beriev, but updated with 21st-century avionics and RCP Engineering's own jet engine, the W-020. The aircraft's passenger capacity was also increased, from 70 to 96. This makes it bigger than an ATR-72.

Operators

After looking at the proposal, RCP-based airlines such as RCP Express (the regional subsidary of RCP Airways) and Island System Airways (ISA) were pressure- I mean convinced to buy a combined total of 54 aircraft. ISA, being the launch operator of the D-03, will receive the first of the aircraft, registered RCP-25831, in January of next year.

Regional airlines in the US, Canada, UK and Indonesia have also signed deals for D-03s. A charter airline in the Philippines has also ordered 7 aircraft for private island-hopping tour services.

Fast-forward by a few months...

Where Does Island System Airways Fly Its D-03s?

Since the domestically-made D-03 seaplane airliner went into service with Island System Airways in January, the airline has wasted no time placing it on the routes it was meant to serve. The fleet of 27 aircraft fly regular flights to small island provinces such as Farmers' Island and Tokua Island, places that no regular airliner could ever serve. With the D-03, it is now made possible direct flights from:
- Tokua Island to/from Himona Island, previously served by a 40-minute ferry ride (the service then connects to Farmers' Island);

RCP-25831 takes off from Tokua Bay. The aircraft currently serves the direct flight mentioned above.

About the First D-03, RCP-25831

As the launch of the aircraft coincided with the 20th anniversary of ISA's airline alliance, Silver Group, a special Silver Group livery was painted on the D-03. This plane is one of only 4 in ISA's fleet to wear the Silver Group livery.

RCP-25831 made its maiden flight on 18 January 2013, taking off at Main City Airport and going around Main City before heading to the newly-opened Tokua Bay Water Airport.

It now flies the direct service between Tokua Island and Main City (mentioned above).

Is the D-03 Safe?

Yes, of course it's safe, no incidents have occurred to it for the entire time it's been operating!
