CG-155 ''Hydra'' Gatling CoilGun

121k AWESOMENESS360  2.6 years ago

With the introduction of the Chimera CoilGun to PyrhPan’s wide variety of weaponry, it gave us more insight as to how could improve upon the rudimentary CoilGun. Looking back at our previous model, it had some flaws that were just desperately waiting to be fixed.

So today, we bring forth a complete overhaul of the CoilGun Design, a three-barreled Gatling Gun that not only increases rate of fire, but it also lacks the drawbacks unearthed from creating high-rate of fire weapons in typical scenarios, mainly with propellant-fired rounds, and rail-launched rounds; these methods of propulsion generally create a lot of heat, and when a higher rate of fire is introduced, this can cause some problems. However, with the CoilGun, it produces a mere fraction of the heat that a typical cannon or launcher would produce, meaning there’s less space to worry about in regards of Heat Sinks, electrical wiring, and Ammunition Storage, which albeit isn’t much of an issue with MMT.

Regardless, this model is able to sustain relatively small size, whilst being incredibly powerful! Take the GRC-65 Executioner for example. This absolutely massive 5-Barreled Gatling RailCannon is a thundering behemoth, in order to reach its terrifying rate of fire, it had to be massive in order to hold all of the complicated electronics, facilities, and maintain general structural integrity. With the Hydra however, the design of a CoilGun is much simpler than that of a RailGun or RailCannon, and therefore can be made smaller, with the barrels themselves taking up most of the space that the weapon occupies, seeing that CoilGuns sometimes need very long barrels in order to be effective at obliterating things.

Speaking of obliterating things, let’s get to the specifications of this gun. The Hydra can fire 300mm. Iron Sabot Tungsten Penetrator Spikes at a terrifying rate of fire, at well over 10,000fps. This muzzle velocity is slightly less than the Chimera, but this is quite the fair trade; slightly less firing distance and muzzle velocity, traded in for much higher rate of fire, dealing excessive damage to almost anything it hits.

Something I feel wasn’t cleared up about the ammunition that this fires, and how exactly it fires that wasn’t mentioned with the production of the Chimera, I shall list now:

CoilGuns use electromagnetic propulsion to accelerate magnetic rounds at intense speeds, by pulling the projectile using a series of coils; the coils activate in a rapid succession, the first coil gets the round going by pulling it towards itself, and then once it’s moving, the coil deactivates. From here, the next coil activates, pulling the round even faster. Rinse and repeat a good few times, and you’ve got a very fast projectile that comes out of the barrel.

There are two principles that determine how fast your projectile will be moving, barrel length, and coil strength. Typically, the longer the barrel, the more coils can be added onto the barrel. More coils, equals more speed, and more speed equals more boom. Alternatively, utilizing stronger coils can do the job just as easily, if not even more effectively, as it requires less coils, and therefore less barrel length. The Hydra here uses the latter, 7 extremely powerful coils accelerate the projectile at immense speeds, without being too long.

Speaking of the projectile, the round that the Hydra fires is similar to the one that the Chimera fires, just 50mm. smaller. The shell that the Hydra fires is actually rather complicated to explain, but can be easily understood with enough knowledge on how magnets work. The shell this gun fires has to be magnetic, in order for it to even fire from the gun. Iron is a great magnet, and works perfectly in the CoilGun! The one issue with using iron as a projectile though, is that it doesn’t have nearly as much penetration power as something like Tungsten. Tungsten however, is a very poor magnet, and wouldn’t work properly in the gun.

There is however, a “simple” solution to this. Much like the Sabot Shell of a traditional RailGun, the Hydra CoilGun and the Chimera CoilGun both utilize Sabot Shells. To simplify this round, it is a Tungsten Penetrator Spike encased in an Iron Sabot. When fired, the iron is aggressively attracted to the magnets, and is accelerated at ridiculous speeds. Upon leaving the barrel, the Iron Sabot separates from the Tungsten Penetrator Spike, and leaves the spike free to streak through the air and annihilate everything it hits, before disintegrating in a shower of white hot sparks.

The Hydra’s immense rate of fire is possible via an Autoloader Carrousel, and MMT Modules that create the rounds inside the gun, loading them onto the carrousel, before being fired out of the gun. It’s all a beautifully destructive process really, dead-accurate timing and meticulously crafted feats of engineering, all harmonizing together in a symphony of DEATH.

I couldn’t think of a more striking and orderly, yet chaotic and violent way to go.

Have Fun!
