Yakovlev Yak-141 "Freestyle" (VTOL)

120k ACEPILOT109  4.1 years ago

Well, its a VTOL aircraft developed and built by the soviet union. this aircraft improved on many of the British Harriers issues, its fast, better armed, and more efficient. It was devolved on the Yak 36/38, and used many of the same tech as it, like the air thrusters and ejection seats that automatically went off if a engine failed because of how fast the plane would spin out of control. Its capable of VTOL, STOL, and conventional landings and take offs. Its flaws where the short hover time of just 2 1/2 minutes, 3 engines/more room for failure, and the ejection seat ejecting and the plane not having an issues continues to fly in autopilot. Even through these challenges the aircraft was a success, going into the Soviet Navy on the aircraft carriers. The aircraft was also looked at by Lockheed Martin. There isn't much information about it publicly but it seems as the Yak 141 influenced the design of the XF-35. Examples include the ducted engine for VTOL, and the jets in the nose with the opening door. Its named was changed a lot, but the 141 was the final name given before it was sent to Lockheed martin and it was the only publicly known name for the aircraft for propaganda reasons.

Activation Group 1 : Flaps Down
Activation Group 2 :VTOL Mode
Activation Group 3 : Navigation Lights
Activation Group 4 : Anti-collision Lights
Activation Group 5 : Taxi/Landing Lights
Vertical Take Off and Landing Mode Controls:
Normal helicopter controls, but use throttle to control sink rate.
Conventional Aircraft Controls:
Same as any normal aircraft

Although not hard, it can be very unstable in a transition. For normal aircraft operations flaps are recommended for landing only. For VTOL, flaps should always be retracted, and 2 always activated unless you transition. Transiting you push full forward and slowly throttle up, once at around 100 MPH disable VTOL mode and keep pushing forward till you regain control. To go back to VTOL simple get as slow as you can (flaps can be used for this) and when ready activate VTOL and flare to totally kill all forward speed. then fly like a normal VTOL/helicopter.
