TL;DR: Two Words. Ground, Attack.

Please at least read the Operation section!

The IR-3 Orthrus is an Autogyro Trainer designed for teaching pilots the basics of unpowered rotorcrafts. The intent is to educate pilots on how to fly and build autogyros since the number of crafts on SP is quite low.

Only 25 parts were used in building in order to comply with WinWing's 25 part challenge. In the future there will be a sister aircraft that utilizes concepts from the IR-3 with more parts and detail.

Max Speed: 320 kph (200 mph)
Never Exceed Speed: 380 kph (236mph)
Stall Speed: 60 kph (37 mph) @300 RPM
Cruise Speed: 200 kph (124 mph)
Max Sustained G Loading: 3.8G

Flight Manual

Action Group 1 increases the collective or blade pitch by a few degrees for momentary increased lift. The drag caused by using it will slow the rotor rpm considerably and may lead to a partial or complete loss of control if used for too long. The minimum control speed is 300 rpm and the minimum lift speed is 180 rpm. The maximum is ~700 rpm.

For takeoff, the tilt the bottom of the rotor towards the airstream to generate rotor RPM. Rotation occurs at speeds greater than 100 kph and a rotor rpm above 220. The rpm should be higher than 300 at all times. The aircraft might stall when the rpm is lower than 300 and performing high angles of slip.

When in slow flight,(less than 200 kph), Orthrus behaves more as helicopter rather than a fixed wing aircraft. Most of the lift is being generated by rotor, thus rpm should stay above 300 to avoid sinking. Yaw authority is greatest at these speeds and can be used to make quick turns.

In order to make a quick turn, rapidly apply full yaw and positive elevator to reduce speed. Counterturn with light roll and elevator movements. Harsh inputs may disrupt the stability of the aircraft and should be avoided.

The both IR-3 models are not rated for combat. You will get 'spunch bop'ed' out of the air if you try and agro live targets without a plan of attack. It's recommended to only attack training targets or small convoys (1-2 AA Tanks).

It is recommended to land conventionally like a fixed wing aircraft at 100-120 kmh. However Orthrus do have short landing capabilities due to autorotation. Orthrus can fiy without the main rotor present, if that should occur landing speed should be above 240 kph to avoid an uncontrolled spin.
