Description :

The T‑80BV is a fast, gas‑turbine–powered Soviet main battle tank developed as an evolution of the T‑64 series. It retains the compact low‑profile hull layout of earlier designs but introduces a more refined cast turret, improved armor arrays, and Kontakt‑1 explosive reactive armor across the glacis, turret cheeks, and side plates. Powered by the GTD‑1000/1100 turbine, the tank accelerates rapidly and reaches high speeds across mixed terrain, giving it one of the best mobility profiles of any Cold War MBT.

Armament centers around a 125 mm 2A46M‑1 smoothbore gun fed by a 28‑round carousel autoloader, with additional ammunition stored in the hull. A coaxial 7.62 mm PKT and a remotely‑operated 12.7 mm NSVT HMG—aimed through the PZU‑5 sight inside the turret—round out its weapons. The gunner uses the 1G42 sight with optional red reticle illumination for aiming in shadowed terrain.

The T‑80BV maintained the T‑64’s low silhouette and autoloader concept, but combined it with superior mobility, better protection, and a more user‑friendly turret layout, making it one of the most capable Soviet MBTs of the 1980s.
