The VK 45.02 was Ferdinand Porsche's attempt at a successor to their arguably failed Porsche Tiger (VK 45.01) and a competitor to Henschel's Königstiger. Three were built, with 2 being converted to the Hinten platform, but none saw service and the Vorne's hull was never found as it was supposedly bombed.

The design process started in 1942, only weeks after the denial of the VK 45.01 by the Wehrmact, with 2 planned variants, the Vorne (ausf. A) and the Hintten (ausf. B). The Vorne had a conventional arrangement with 5 crewmen, a turret up front and the engines (yes, 2 V10 turbodiesels) on the mid-rear.

Power was supplied to each one of the tracks by 2 546 kW V10 Porsche-Mayback ML210 turbodiesel engines (basically a chopped ML230 from the Königstiger with forced induction thrown in and a higher RPM limit), totaling 1092 kW, and two electric generators, enabling a sped of 48 kph forwards and 12 kph backwards in perfect conditions.

In mid 1943 the prototypes were built, both the conventional ausf. A and the rear-turreted ausf. B, and tested against the Panzerkampfwagen VI ausf. B, the Königstiger. In fears of lackluster reliability, Henschels tank was chosen despite Porsche's offering being overall better.

Controls for both the ausf. A and the ausf. B are the same, where Trim and Yaw control the hull movement and traverse, Pitch and VTOL control the Hull Mount's traverse and elevation, Pitch and Roll deal with the Turret controls.
