The Supermarine Spitfire is easily one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history and was the only British fighter to be produced continuously throughout the Second World War. In response to the introduction of the Fw 190, the Spitfire was upgraded with later series of the Merlin engine. Dubbed Mk IX, this dramatically increased the Spitfire’s performance compared to the Mk V. The LF Mk IX’s engine is tuned for lower altitudes and is the most produced variant of the Mk IX Spitfire.

During the Second World War, Britain was the primary operator of the Spitfire and the USSR also used Spitfire Mk IX’s. Postwar, Israel, Egypt, India, and Burma were notable operators of the Spitfire Mk IX. Around 50 Spitfires are airworthy today. Read more…
