The Greater Arland

Günther Gü 85 Albtraum

Introduction

The Günther Gü 85, nicknamed Albtraum is a fighter aircraft and a fighter-bomber that was designed and produced by the Arland aircraft manufacturer Günther. It was the second operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.

History

Although the Günther Gü 80 Traum was an impressive fighter in it's own rights, it had flaws that can hindrance the pilot perfomance, and an obstacle nightmare for the maintenance crew. First of, some report from the pilots experience a sudden engine shut-off while in mid-air; this was due to the poorly and rushed designed engine by the Günther manufacturer. Another problem was that, the Gü 80's engine did not provide sufficient thrust and throttle respond was slow, this could be a problem in certain circumstances such as takeoff during urgent situation where the aircraft became a vulnerable target.

after several complaints from servicemen. the Arland Air Force order Günther to design a new jet to replace the Gü 80. The Günther Gü 85 "Albtraum" was the answer to the problem of the Gü 80. It had a longer range compared to Gü 80, the engine was more reliable, and the aircraft was easier to maintain.

This aircraft was made even more famous by the popular Arland air ace, Bruno Fischer, also known as the "Blood Knight". Even more crazy there was also the rare unofficial variant of this aircraft named Gü 85BK, that was requested by Bruno; to install a medium tank turret on top of his plane. At first the workers were baffled, and thinking it was the most ridiculous idea. But Bruno insisted to grant the request. At first, they hesitated and thought for a minute, but because Bruno was the most respected member of the Arland Air Force, they complied with him. His comrade from the same branch help him to make it possible, along with some from the Army branch.

Despite the defeat of the Arland in World War II. Günther Gü 85 Albtraum was considered to be a successful aircraft; both from the Allied and Five-Party Pact. After the war, some of the Allied nations produced their own Gü 85 and put into service for each of their own Air Force.
