Here's a tip: Make something that makes you stand out. Mine is the fact my planes and tanks have a good story around them, that it is not necessarily about the airplane, but about the history I have concocted around the airplane.

Take my Pummeler series. The plane itself is nothing special. It's a pretty basic single-engine taildragger monoplane that can carry lots of bombs, rockets, and maybe even missiles. And a cool paint job. But the thing that made it special is the lore I have built around the aircraft, a fictional historical narrative that takes it to war on many occasions and tells of the great skill the pilots who flew them had that made it infamous as a precise, and deadly aircraft that its mere presence was enough to force opposing forces to retreat. It details its long history and extensive use with my fictional air force, from its inception to its final retirement from frontline service over half a century later, becoming a symbol of the military might of my fictional country.

Of course, you don't need to take the route I took. I took that because I like writing stories. Others have made their names from building planes so crazy they work, rivet-for-rivet models of aircraft, part-for-part models of everything but planes, functional ships, and outrageously modded components. People follow me for the story behind the planes and tanks I make, because admittedly, my planes aren't the prettiest, fastest, or most maneuverable. It's the story behind them.

Your first plane will suck. That's a given for everyone. But what it does it gives you a baseline for improvement. Because when you're at the bottom of a canyon, the only way there is to go is up.
