Embraer's new toy accommodates up to 12 passengers, flies from São Paulo to Miami nonstop, and costs from US$21 million.

The Praetor 600 also takes off short and climbs quickly – characteristics that allow it to operate on short runways such as Angra dos Reis or Jacarepaguá.

The new jet puts Embraer in contention for the competitive ‘super midsize’ segment – a market that is expected to generate US$30 billion in the next decade. For comparison purposes, the most expensive jet in the category is the Falcon 2000s: US$30 million (list price).

The Praetor 600 began to be delivered to its first customers at the end of June and made its debut yesterday at Labace, the executive aviation fair that runs until Thursday in Congonhas. Embraer has already sold several units of the Praetor family in the USA and Europe and three in Brazil: one to an entrepreneur in the new economy, and two to banks.

“This jet is fantastic for the category in terms of efficiency, safety, technology and low operating costs,” said a pilot who tested the Praetor. “There’s nothing that comes close to them in that category.”

The Praetor 600 is not exactly a new project. It is based on the Legacy 500, which gained more autonomy and a new cabin. The Praetor 600 – as well as its more compact version, the Praetor 500, which also debuts this year at Labace – features technologies typical of larger and more expensive jets, such as the full fly by wire system, which replaces manual controls with an electronic interface , and an active turbulence reduction system.

The Praetor also comes with a broadband internet antenna, developed by Embraer itself. (The antenna still requires certification to work in Brazil.) The cabin design was entirely designed by Embraer itself and includes a bed that is formed from the joining of two seats.

The Praetor 600 already has orders to occupy the Embraer factory in São José dos Campos for a year. Embraer is betting on the Praetor to reach the guidance of 90 to 110 deliveries in executive aviation – a target that still seems far from being achieved. In the first half of the year, 36 executive jets were delivered.
