I actually prefer both, i like having my detail with functions, such as formation lights, custom missiles, etc.

Previously I was more or less functionality over detail, but lately I've been trying to balance the two a bit more. That said though, functionality takes priority with detail coming when possible for me.

I try to go for functionality first, visuals are secondary..
Or try to mix the 2 as much as possible..

Detail and functionality are not exclusive of each other, and can actually come together. I like to create functional details, that either add to the body of the aircraft, or add to the functionality of a certain system.

I like both, especially with my own planes. By adding detail with no aircraft collisions, mass, or drag, my aircraft are as detailed as I can make them.
