Turret Control Question

2,269 Mickk  5.0 years ago

So, what is the best way to control a turret?

The turret in question is ground based a does not move, so all controls are open to it.
.
The problem I'm having is the current controls 'reset to zero' (I'm using rotaters and hinges) and I have not been able to switch that off.
Basically as soon as you take your hands off the controls, the turret heads for its base position which is no good when you are trying to shoot something down and makes control jerky and horrible when trying to hold a target.

    @doge
    I'd like to avoid using mods if at all possible, I know there are a bunch of people who can't run mods because they are on iOS or something that does not let mods run.

    If on mobile pitch and roll if on PC the tank aiming mod compiled with advanced targeting
    Edit roll for side to side pitch for up and down

    Use VTOL and Trim controls.

    @ColonelStriker
    An interesting idea that I will have to try out as a possible alternative to what I have already.

    Thanks for the info, that is something I did not know.
    Using a keyboard/mouse combo to control the turret may just work.
    .
    I have a turret system set up, just need to work the kinks out of it and work out a reasonable control system that won't drive people crazy. heh

    If the turret is stationary (i.e not mounted to a vehicle), I would use Gyroscopes with the controls tied to roll and pitch. It seems more intuitive than the VTOL and Trim, but it requires skills to build one, and you are limited to non moving installments. The VTOL/Trim combo is best for versatility.

    Then there are joysticks vs keyboard. Gets complex after that.

    @AFS23
    The next question would be;
    are there keyboard controls for the VTOL and Trim sliders?
    .
    This is me being lazy by the way, I'm sure if I did a search something relevant would pop up, along with a billion non-relevant thing to go through.
