Can someone help me with a scale problem?

30.4k Hyattorama  5.8 years ago

I’ve been using Overload and Fine Tuner on a build. I’ve changed the mass and drag scale on many parts. It flies great. But it’s scale is off, too big. And when I use the fine tuner scale tool to scale the whole thing down, well at first it seems like the flight characteristics are the same. But when I start to aileron roll, the roll rate keeps accelerating, and the plane spins faster and faster until it explodes. Does anyone know what I need to do to rectify this mild to moderate spin-til-explode problem? Thanks!

Ah, ok gotcha. Well my plane flew fine until I scaled it down, and I did mess with drag and mass scale a bunch, so I think I flubbed it up somewhere along the way... @randomusername

Wow thanks for taking the time to type all that out! That is extremely helpful to me! @Chancey21

@Chancey21 early access to WIP? I’m sorry I don’t know that that is.

How to change the weight of a whole plane:
Scale it down in fine tuner with calculate mass on
Scale it back up with calculate mass off

Thanks, that means a lot to me, have early access to my WIP.
    My building process for fictionals:
Draw blueprints- take several concepts from real life and mash them together.

Build fuselage- do it nicely, it’s the basis

    Add wings- airfoil, control surfaces

Add Tailplane- build it, add control surfaces

Build details- livery, decals, registration number and review SimpleTips 3

    Cockpit- dials stick/yolk

Make it fly- reduce weight, add wings (takes longest)
    Ask for testers

Are you referring to a specific build of mine? Or are you saying that the issue I described is a symptom of the horizontal and vertical stabilizers?@randomusername

Yeah, I’ve been tinkering with mass scale a bunch and so far I haven’t solved the issue... @BoganBoganTheMan

Hey, actually I’m building an ultralight, and I’ve used your Martin Bluebottle (which I completely adore btw) as a reference. So I wanted to ask you; what was your process? Did you build it big and then scale the whole thing down with fine tuner? And did you change mass and drag scale with Overload on some parts beforehand? Also, I really hope you get a chance to see my build, and hear what your opinion is, since you are one of the SP gods to me hahaha. @Chancey21

Will that affect the roll rate acceleration problem or just the “explode cause it’s spinning too fast” problem? Also... I don’t think I have the skill/knowledge to do that fix haha. But I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you for your help :) @DerekSP

What I often do if I can't precisely locate and fix the issue, is just disabling collisions of every single part.
I just open the XML file of the aircraft, and add the collision attribute using Search and Replace (Ctrl+H)

    Check “calculate mass”
